my idol?

I recently started gathering with a group of ladies every other week to do some Bible study.   We are starting out with a study guide: Get Out of Your Head, A Study in Philippians by Jennie Allen.

Interestingly enough, this study has encouraged me to get IN to my head a bit.  It has challenged me to consider what I actually THINK about; what I hold in the forefront of my thoughts.  I have uncovered that my most prevalent thought/emotion is Anticipation.   Not worry, or fear.... just anticipation of things to come.... mostly all of the good things.   I get caught up in planning and looking forward to certain events or occasions.
While that, in itself, is not a "bad" thing, I know that always looking ahead isn't the best way to spend my time.   I want to learn to be in the moment and to enjoy what each day brings.

When Thayer died, I learned rather abruptly that plans can change so quickly.   I remember throwing away my planner after Thayer died.    I had a tough relationship with paper calendars for quite a while after his death.   Here I am, over 14 years later tethered to my planning and my calendar.
I won't deny it.... I am a planner through and through.   I have said many times that if I don't plan something, it doesn't happen.
I've realized that this probably classifies me as a control freak.  eek.
I'm starting to grasp that my over-planning might not always be the best thing.

God says, Be still and know that I am God (Psalm46:10).

Do I take the time to be still and rest in His presence? Am I putting my full calendar squares and busyness ahead of my relationship with God?
Is over-planning my idol?!

Whew. Idols.
Jennie Allen made a bold statement in the video that accompanies our study:
"We need to hate the things we love more than God."

This statement reminded me of Luke 14:26:
If anyone comes to me and does not hate his own father and mother and wife and children and brothers and sisters, yes, and even his own life, he cannot be my disciple.  (ESV)

The mention of this verse pretty much derailed our little study group.   Everyone agreed that "hate" was such a strong word!  The thought of "hating" our family was awful to consider.
I found a nice article that explains this verse a little more in context:  PLEASE READ HERE.
In short, Jesus' command requires us to prioritize our relationship with Him above all other relationships.  We are to prioritize our relationship with Him over everyone and everything!

You shall have no other gods before me.  (Exodus 20:3)

I've gained a new perspective to consider as I fill my calendar:
Am I devoting my time and energy to Him?
How do I spend my free time?  What are my idols?

Lord, please direct my thoughts and help me to prioritize you above all else.

black squirrel

Not our squirrel.  But similar :)

There is a solid black squirrel that lives in our yard.
I had never seen a black squirrel before moving into our neighborhood.   I started to regularly observe a black squirrel on my morning walks a few years ago, and was excited to consider it a rare sighting.    My interest was peaked when one took up residence in our yard earlier this year.    It seems that black squirrels are a bit rare.... only 1 in 10,000 squirrels don a black coat.

Our squirrel catches my eye, daily.  Some days I have seen him* sit upright in our driveway for long stretches of time, as if in deep thought.   One day I stared at him for several minutes as he held an acorn right outside of my window.   He'll jump from the trees or sit on logs.  You know- just doing squirrel things.
I'm aware that there are tons of other squirrels out there.... but he is the only one who entertains me.  He stands out.  He has zero camouflage amongst the brown leaves and tree bark.  There's really nowhere that he can hide.   I love that he is unique.

Nature, and rarities in nature, are grand reminders of how we are all unique creations.  God has a purpose and a plan for us.   He cares for the sparrows, he cares for the black squirrels and he cares for you!

I think about how that black squirrel stands out and  I wonder what impression I have on people around me.  Do I fall into the background? Or do I stand out?  Do people see my uniqueness in Christ?   Do I make a difference in someone's day?   Can I bring a smile to someone's face?
I don't want to be a regular ol' squirrel.
I want to be a black squirrel.  :)

In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven.     Matthew 5:16

*I haven't gotten close enough to know for sure.... but we like to assume he is male.  :)   He doesn't have an official name yet.

do the thing

I often use the phrase, "sometimes we have to do hard things".
Most often, it's an internal speech to myself.
Other times, I'm thinking it towards people who are making excuses or procrastinating.
And very rarely, I'm caught saying it out loud to push someone to just DO THE THING!

Our culture seems to be producing people who want to avoid the hard things.
There's a pill, a program, a product, or an app that "solves" everything.

People don't like being uncomfortable or being exposed to new situations.    I witness so many people wanting to take the easy way out.

I have found that it's those uncomfortable moments that produce the most reward, pride, growth and fulfillment.
This is part of living.

Whenever I'm unsure of the next step, I'm just going to do the thing.  Whether it's just some random thing in my home or something that takes intentional planning.....
I want to be fearless and do the thing

Life is full of hard moments.   I feel like that's where we can build the most character.

Make time for friends, take time to help people, visit with family, volunteer at the place, do the house project, make the recipe, attend the event, plan the trip,  work in the yard, build something, create something, play with the kids, put down the phone, interact with people.

Time is going to pass anyway.
Make the most of it.
Do the thing.

14 years

Here we go.... my yearly update and thoughts about Thayer's death anniversary.   Yesterday marked 14 years.  I was ready to blog, I was ready to do some computer projects, I was ready to do something.... but I couldn't.  My attention span was short yesterday.  I couldn't really get myself to do anything.   I have always thought that my body knows when these dates are here.

Today I made myself have an official "lunch break" and watch a movie before I started with my to-do list.   I managed to watch an entire movie about a cat that becomes a guy, and then goes back to being a cat.  It was just as bizarre and weird as it sounds.   But I actually sat through it.   Most movies I set out to watch take me 3 or more hours to finish because I get highly distracted by piddling around the house or tending to chores.   This one... I watched through in one sitting.  Not sure if that's a good- or bad-sign of my mental health.

As of now, I've caught up on some computer chores and I'm sitting to think about what I should have written yesterday.
The entire life and death thing has become rather ordinary since I've worked at the funeral home.  Death is never wanted.... but I've learned to accept it.   I learned a lot about death when Thayer died; and as I age, it's even more "expected" (if that's the right word).
We're all on borrowed time.
What matters is how we spend that time.

Thayer's time was short, but no doubt he spent his time well.   I will always admire him for the time he invested in family and friends, the time he spent helping others, and the hard work he put in, daily, to better himself and those around him.

This all makes me consider how I'm spending my own time.
I recently decided to try to cut back my screen time on my phone.  My goal is 30 minutes/day.   However I'm still averaging just under 2 hours.    Certainly a work in progress.
I did some math and realized that spending 2 hours a day looking at a screen equals THIRTY (30) DAYS of a year.  If we do the math with waking hours.... it's over FORTY-FIVE DAYS!   Holy cow.... an entire MONTH, or more, of a YEAR completely evaporated.
This has been a wake up call for me.

(Granted.... watching a movie about a cat-guy isn't the best alternative)

I hope to be more intentional with my time so that one day someone will say..... "she lived her life well".

Proverbs 27:1 Do not boast about tomorrow, for you do not know what a day may bring.

Today is our day.   Make the most of it.

always good

This week, I have sat with my dear friend who was thrown into turmoil with the sudden death of her Mama and the tumultuous hospitalization of her Daddy.  The crisis continues.... with really no resolution on hand.  There are so many questions about the days, weeks, months to come.

As a friend, my heart breaks for her, and I don't know what to do other than be available.  It's been an emotional week....
for lots of people.

So I keep telling myself God is always good.   Even in the midst of turmoil and loss.... God is there.  He sees us.  He hears us.  He grieves with us.   It's so hard to see from the pit...  but God's plan is bigger than all of this mess.   So much of life is waiting.  And trusting.

Music is always what seems to point me in the correct mindset when trials come.  I believe that God speaks to us through music.
Imagine my "got it" moment when the first song on my Pandora app the other day was "Always Good" by Andrew Peterson.

God, thanks for this.  You're always good.

crisis

I heard somewhere that we, as people, are either getting ready to enter a crisis, are currently IN a crisis, or in the process of coming out of a crisis.   I also think that statistically we are in some sort of crisis every 6 months.
Let me tell you..... I feel like I'm surrounded by people in crises.
It has been heavy on my emotions... which says a lot, because I didn't know I was so caring.  hah.

If you've seen me recently, I have probably blabbered to you about Lucas' stolen car, his recovered car, his lost car, his new orders for England.  (All of that was a lot for my mama heart, but Lucas handled things like a boss, as usual.)
On top of that:   My mother-in-law has been diagnosed with cancer,  my sweet friend's mom is in the hospital, my sister-in-law had to say goodbye to her dog, my sister is dealing with mobility issues, and my brother-in-law's granddaddy died.
In our own household:  I'm head first into menopausal hot flashes, and Greg is having to deal with so many crazy women.  (haha)
Whew.

I've been alone for most of today.... and I think I'm recovered from a crazy few weeks.  I cut the grass and listened to a few podcasts before planting myself on a pool float.

One podcast reminded me that we are 100% going to face struggles in our lives.  Those times of crises are 100% going to come.  But the thing to remember is that Jesus will 100% meet us in those moments.
I can testify to that.  And I think that fact has kept me somewhat "calm" over the past few weeks.    Whatever life throws our way, Jesus is 100% there for us.
This is a friendly reminder to you, and me, to find Jesus during those uncertain and scary moments.   Let's have faith like the lady in Mark 5:25-34... simply reach for His garment, and see how He will show Himself.

Another podcast reminded me to be content where I am.   Even in the tough times.   There are so many seasons of life: so many happy moments, so many sad moments, so many joys and trials.
If we keep in mind that trials are where we most often meet Jesus, let's see him in those moments- and grow our relationship with Him.   I strive to be content in all circumstances, knowing that God is in control.

All of lifes moments are part of the bigger picture!!  Let's loosen our grip on the brush and allow Jesus to paint our story.

the little things

As I was driving to a friend's house on Sunday for our weekly girls' night I had a feeling wash over me.    Something told me to really enjoy my time with my girls: For our talking, for our games, for our laughter, or for whatever our night would bring.
I often find myself thinking about the next thing, the next day, the next chore.   Often watching the clock for no real reason.
But in that moment, I wanted to be fully PRESENT in my time with my people.
We are not promised another day, or even another moment.... so we should live fully in the NOW.

I told the girls about my revelation, which didn't come across as very deep when I said it out loud. ha-ha.  We all kinda know this in our beings.   But in our society, being present in the moment is easier said than done.
I went on to enjoy my evening.... no timeline.... just making memories where it mattered.

This idea of being present has followed me into the week as well.  (I love it when God is driving home a good point).

Greg and I watched the final episode of This is Us** last night.   And guess what?!.... the entire episode was strategically written to remind us to embrace the little things in life.  Those little things are often the most important.
The main character, who struggled with memory loss in her older years, had the biggest fear of losing simple memories of a Saturday afternoon that the family spent together when her kids were young.   Those little moments, little memories, were the important ones!

Watching this show, working at the funeral home, as well as witnessing health issues with others- I'm becoming more keenly aware that we can't escape death and it's the living that we need to do, now.

YouTube recommended a Ted Talk to me, today, which touched on the same subject!  Go figure.   This gal is pretty inspiring.
Here's the synopsis of her talk:

Elin Kjos is a sport’s trainer who was diagnosed with incurable lung cancer two years ago. She was given less than a year to live and has yet defeated all odds. Everyday, she shares her journey with her hundreds of thousands of followers on Instagram. Today, she will talk about how her cancer diagnosis changed her perspective on life. Through this story telling, we hope you will be inspired to start living your life in a more meaningful way. Elin is a former elite swimmer, an entrepreneur in physical training & health and a life inspirer with the motto “Life is here and now”. Since two years ago, she lives with the diagnosis of an incurable lung cancer and wants to inspire others to dare others to live life to its fullest everyday - regardless of diagnoses or challenges in life.

I'm inspired to take hold of my moments,  to make them count. To be present with my people. To be a better listener.  To relax.  To take it all in.

"Take the risks.  Make the big moves, even if they're small ones.  Forge ahead with your lives in any and every direction that moves you.  I'm asking you to be fearless. "  Rebecca Pearson #ThisIsUs

We've only got one shot, one opportunity.   Let's make it count!

** This Is Us had FANTASTIC writers.    Over the seasons, we watched an entire family over many decades.  Generation after generation.  With rewinds and fast forwards.   Such a great, poignant show.  10 out of 10, would recommend.

something good is coming

I'm super late to the world of listening to podcasts.   Basically because I never really knew how to listen to them.  lol.
"Just download the Google Podcast App".
oh!  ha.  That was simple.

I've been opened up to a whole new world of educational entertainment.   I listen to some dark historical stuff, some minimalism stuff, some comedians, and some faith based folks.   I know there's a ton of material out there and I'm very slowly identifying podcasts that fit my interests.  I have enjoyed listening to people way smarter than me, who have researched well, explain all of the things.
(any suggestions?)

The other day I was listening to some chick interview Andrew Peterson.
Andrew was talking about how he went through a period of depression several years ago.  He described how he would often sit and cry for no apparent reason.  His wife would come to him, hold his head in her hands, tell him to look at her... and she would say to him, "Something good is coming".   He said that was such an important reminder.
And that phrase has stuck with me the past few days.

"Something good is coming."

I'm currently IN the "good" and I don't want to take a moment for granted!
However, I can easily remember my own dark moments of the past.  I remember how long those nights were after Thayer died.  How dark my future felt.  I know people probably suggested that I go on some type of medication to make the loss bearable, but I wanted to experience the feelings, the emotions, and see how Jesus met me there in the depths.  I think it's important to be able to feel those dark moments and to be reminded that "something good is coming".

God always provides a way.

In my case, my "good" came from my community of friends and family.  My "good" came from God continually providing for my needs- mentally, physically, emotionally, spiritually.

I can't say enough about how God has consistently surrounded me with the right people at the right time.
Granted, I have had to often seek out - or create - my own "community" in many seasons of my life.  I had to put myself out there, send the texts, make the calls (ack!),  attend the groups, plan the activities, invite others IN.... but in every instance God surrounded me with the right people: My life-long friends as well as those who have come and gone.

It's a precious thing to think back and remember all of the people who have brought the good.
Even more precious to thank God for his provisions.
God always provides a way- just look for it.

Something good is coming.

on the road

I love a good road trip.  So when Greg suggests mini vacations, I am always on board.   Last month we headed to Kentucky to visit the Creation Museum and the Ark Encounter.
Upon booking the hotel in Florence, Kentucky we realized that we were just moments away from Cincinnati- which encouraged Greg to snag some tickets to a Cincinnati Reds game.

We spent two full days reading about creation, the history of the Bible, the significance of Jesus, all about animal adaptation and seeing possible ways the ark could have sustained Noah and the crew.   We watched a speaker talk about aliens (or lack thereof), and watched presentations about various topics.   All in all, a fun, educational outing.

After that we headed over the the ball park to watch a baseball game.   Well.... Greg watched a baseball game.   I basically people-watched and bided my time until I got a hotdog and popcorn.   Greg is slowly learning that concession food is really all that can keep me happy in a stadium.

This past weekend we went to a For King and Country concert. And next week we are heading to a John Crist Show!
I LOVE our outings.  Most of all... I love spending time with my guy.  :)

a little nudge

You know when you start a new job and you dream about it?...  Simply because it's new stuff that your brain is processing?
Yeah, well,  there are some nights that I dream about dead people.   Not scary or disturbing stuff....just snapshots from the day.    And oddly, I've been ok with all of it.   Maybe not even "oddly".   I think my friends have always been correct when they say I have a "cold heart" and that I'm "dead inside". Perhaps I've found my people.  haha.

The upside of the death thing is that I've been thinking about Kids' Haven, almost daily.
Here lies the proof that I'm totally not dead inside!  I do have compassion for people and I do have empathy for those who are grieving.
So.... I just applied to be a volunteer with Kids' Haven.    If I'm accepted- I'm hoping to help out with their summer camp and possibly help facilitate in group nights this fall.   I'm pretty excited to finally "give back" to an organization that helped me and the boys so much!  The connections that we made at Kids' Haven were essential to our journey and I am forever thankful for those friendships.

Over the past few months I've thought about what a circle my journey is making:
I'm working at the same funeral home that processed Thayer's cremation, and now I'm seeking out the same group that was so beneficial to me and my boys.
God certainly uses life experiences to mold us and send us down the path He desires.   Sometimes He is abrupt, and sometimes he nudges.
I would have never guessed that I'd be where I am today.   And I certainly can't guess where I'll be years from now.
The journey continues...

I've been at the new job almost two months.  Since I'm super part time.... I still feel like such a newbie.  I continue to learn each day, and have gotten a grasp on the simple procedures and happenings.  I'm eager to learn new tasks and I'm still so appreciative of the directors who take the time to explain things to me.  Everyone continues to be so gracious and patient.   Such a lovely group of people.  I am so thankful.   I hope that I will grow to become an asset to the team.

I'm still adjusting to a "slower" lifestyle that came along with the job and trickled over into my personal life as well.   I'm working fewer days- which leaves me at home a few days each week.  Instead of overbooking my free time, I have learned to stretch out my lovely morning routine, keep the house in order, attempt to meal plan, run errands, and work in the yard.    Honestly, it's been such a refreshing change.    I am so thankful for my circumstances.  I don't want to take any of these moments for granted, since I'm aware things can change in an instant.
This feels like a new chapter, and I hope it's a long one.

quick trip

We recently had a quick visit with Lucas in New Mexico.
(I just concluded that we hadn't seen him since August!)
My sister, Sherry, accompanied us and I'm glad she endured the travels with Greg and myself.    The flights all went super smoothly which seemed like a first for us.   But it turns out that we couldn't rent a car on a whim in Albuquerque as we had planned to do.    Thankfully, Lucas agreed to be our chauffer for the weekend.
That in itself was an experience.

We had two full days with my boy.
The first day we traveled to Santa Fe to go to
Meow Wolf.  Meow Wolf is an "explorable art experience" that's hard to explain... but pretty interesting!
We enjoyed our time "exploring the experience"!  ;)

The following day, our adventure was to view the area from the top of the Sandia Crest.  Lucas drove us up 10,679 feet above sea level to a snow covered ridge where we saw amazing views of New Mexico below.
Lucas taunted me by standing too close to the edge, which reminded me of our trip to the Grand Canyon when he was 5 years old..... me begging him to get away from the edge.
It's true that mothers never stop worrying about their babies!   And it's true boys' brains don't fully develop.... probably ever.

And just like that, it was time for a breakfast at Denny's followed by our flights home.   We had been anticipating this trip for months and it flew by so quickly!    I'm glad we finally got to see Lucas in his new environment.
I'm always so proud of my boys.  :)

growth

The daffodils have started to emerge from their slumber.  I think it's too early.  The cut of the winter wind doesn't seem to be the correct time for new growth.   However I'm not in charge of that- and I trust that God's timing for the garden is more than sufficient.

Seeing the new greenery emerge reminds me that I still need to cut back some of the plant foliage that didn't whither until after the first snow.  Interesting how the fall clean-up becomes the winter clean-up and it will slowly merge into a spring clean-up, in preparation for the summer growth, followed by a summer season of tidying the spent flowers.
And so it goes.

In years past, I grumbled about having to tend to the plants.   And now I'm seeing the grand benefit of tending to a garden, even if that garden is a small flowerbed.

I've lately been drawn to books and documentaries about the benefits of gardens.*   The benefits that being in nature has on one's physical, emotional, mental and spiritual well being is of no surprise to any of us.   It's a given that being in, and being active in God's creation is GOOD for us.   Yet our society spends almost 90% of our time indoors.  (A quick google search points out articles about what happens to our bodies by spending so much time indoors)

This past week, I missed my morning walks, for whatever reasons.  And I FELT it!  My mood was off, my body felt different.  That has a lot to do with my body missing the movement, but I also think it has a LOT to do with not being outdoors.   I know my soul missed drinking in the fresh air and attending to the sounds of creation.
I've walked for the past two days.... And I'm already feeling more like myself.
I am 1000% convinced that being outdoors, and participating in nature is essential for our well being.

This afternoon I sit behind this glass and witness the trees hold their ground against, what Pooh would call, a "rather blustery day".
Those little daffodils are standing firm, soaking in the sun, unfazed by the windy chaos above.
They are flourishing.
I'd like to think I'm on the same journey.

new wardrobe

The new job..... is at a funeral home!   Like I said.... entirely new for me.   It's been two weeks of part time work and I am very hopeful.   I come home at the end of the day feeling h a p p y!  I am learning a lot and I hope that I'll be able to settle in as time progresses.   The folks there have been super patient with me, and I am so thankful for their willingness to show me the ropes.   I'm not too sure of my schedule.... so I often joke about whether the boss will ask me to return for another day.    I'm set to show-up two more days this week, so I consider that a good sign.

This is a HUGE change in pace for me and I'm slowly adjusting to the new surroundings.
I was telling a friend that I still feel like a person at the end of the day..... not a tired, grouchy minion.    Since I'm not covered in sweat and milkshake splatter at the end of a shift, I'm able to run errands or do things after work.   Dressing in normal clothes is a welcome change, although a bit stressful as I piece together a wardrobe that will pass as funeral attire.
All in all, I'm feeling like a productive person again! I'm excited to learn, to contribute, and to become a part of a new team.

next

Here I am, after only a year and a half of employment, gladly burning the ships, again.   I stewed over my situation these past few months, and I couldn't be happier with my decision to resign.
I've told everyone that there is probably a much longer discussion to be had about finding my purpose and having a job with meaning.
But in simple terms, I think I just got tired of peddling chicken to people addicted to MSG.

I left without having another plan in place.
I am fortunate enough to have a very capable husband and provider that allows me to have some freedom in choosing what comes next.   Last night I jokingly mentioned to him that I feel like I want to be one of those 40 year old kids in the basement who are waiting for the "right" job to come along.    I LOVE being a housewife and socialite.  I want to take my time and find something that I can be passionate about.

But the truth is.... after only three days of being jobless I am uneasy.  I know Greg wants me to work somewhere.... not only for my sanity (because I need to get out of the house each day)... but also to fund my social activities (when I leave my house each day).
It's a catch 22.  :)

I'm not a fan of uncertainty and I've been a antsy not knowing what to expect each day.
I put in an application last week and was just getting ready to check on that status when I received a phone call from another guy I talked to a few weeks ago.
Looks like I'll be clocking in to try something entirely new on Monday morning at 10am.
The only thing this new job has in common with CFA is that people are always dying to get there.
I'm excited to see if this new opportunity will be a good fit.

More to come....

year end

Finishing out another year.   I usually take some time to read back through old blog posts...and I realized that I posted less than 10 this year.     That's a far cry from previous years and a bit discouraging- realizing that I don't really have much to get out of my brain these days.

Looking back over the last few months:
I never completed that 21 days of writing.   But the 21st Annual Pumpkin Party, Taylor's wedding and Regina's Favorite Things Party all came and went.  Good times with all of it.

Greg and I at Taylor and Logan's wedding.
October 30,2021

I took the time in the last months to read back through ALL of my past blog posts (that I have published in several bound books, dating from 2005-2019.)   I am SO thankful to have those words in print.  There were so many moments and stories about my kids that I didn't remember AT ALL!  I 'm so glad that I have written evidence of the years past.
Sadly there was plenty of entries with evidence of why my kids would need therapy as adults.  yikes. (Reading back through those posts.... I realize that I am NOT the same person that I used to be. And I also wish I had written more about the positive things in our lives.)
Fortunately, both boys seem to be doing fairly well as young adults and I'm thankful that God got them through some really rough times with their crazy mom.

December:
I always remember that the Christmas season is not my favorite.   The commercialism and busyness is overrated.    I took advice from a YouTuber and decided not to smash visits with everyone I know into one month.   I have arranged to see some of my dear friends in January..... and surprisingly, that helped me focus a bit more on family during my days off from work.

This is our first Christmas as empty nesters.... so I had additional feelings about things.
Decorating the Christmas tree was especially hard this year.  (Thanks, Greg, for taking on the task, and my whining).    The ornaments of my previous life are still strewn in our ornament box.... and I was faced with lots of memories that I wasn't ready for.  (Don't worry....I'm making plans to organize and divide ornaments between the boys as we un-decorate this week)

Lucas had to work over Christmas.... so he wasn't able to come home. :(

Turns out that we had a lovely Christmas eve.   The step-kids came to visit and share a slideshow of their wedding pictures.   Daniel came over in the evening and and we had a video call with Lucas! We were able to catch up with him for almost two hours.  We chatted and opened gifts together.  It was almost as if he were in the room.  :)

So thankful for technology!

Christmas day consisted of lunch with my family and dinner with Greg's family.
All in all- a lovely Christmas weekend.

Today...I put away the Christmas decorations.   So glad to have that stuff behind us.  Till next year.

habit fail

Well.  I failed my own 21 day challenge.    I'm going to rewind to October where I vowed to write for 21 days to create a habit.   I managed only 16 days.... and not even consecutively.
Day one was my previous post.
Here are the following 15 days, unchecked and unedited, for your reading enjoyment:

21 Day Project.

Creating Habit.

10/2/21

Day 2.

I’m exhausted from working in the yard all day.   I’ve been obsessive about clearing up some of the underbrush in our wooded sections.   It’s the kind of work that I’ve done for days and days, and no one will notice.   Greg can’t even comprehend the amount of hard work I have put in.   It’s much “cleaner” and I can see the sun shine through in places that have always been in shadows.
Why is it that so many hard things go unnoticed?
Isn’t that true for work we do on ourselves as well?
Like grief work.  It’s hard.   The blood, sweat and tears…. Mostly tears….. happen in a dramatic way and then somehow the survivor just shows up on the other side.  No one really noticed it while it is happening.   But slowly, the light shines through the places that used to be so covered in shadow.
Thayer’s death was like that for me.  There was so much shadow, for so long.   But I grieved, I wrote, I raised kids, I did the work.   Lots of hard work…. Mentally, emotionally, spiritually, physically.  No one noticed the work, but I did.   Even now, I notice those rays of sunshine spilling through and I think, “look at me now.  I did it.”  And then I remember that those rays of sunshine are God’s fingerprints reaching in to light my way.   Without God the shadows would have thickened and I would have suffocated in the darkness.    I was able to do that work, because of God.   I am thankful.

10/3/21

Day 3.

The window is bright today and the leaves are slowly swaying in the breeze.   Sunshine, although the weather app said that it would be mostly cloudy today.   There may be clouds behind the trees, but all I see are the leaves illuminated with sunshine.   I thought this view would be bright and inspiring.  It’s basically just greenery.  However, I can see the larger trunks that are more evident since I cut back the smaller brush trees that had sprouted and littered up the “forest” floor in our front yard.  I love that we are kind of secluded and hidden from the road.   Our new red door is seen easily though.   The red door that Greg mentioned today, and took credit for choosing.  Little changes around the house that make a big difference.
I love my guest room, and now my writing room.  How quickly I dismissed my kids’ rooms.    I wonder if that is normal behavior of empty nesters.  I feel like I made the transition much easier than some people.   I chalk it up to the fact that I was a single mom for so many years.  In a way, it’s finally “my” time.  However that sounds rather selfish.   On the other hand, I am thankful that Greg and I have some time to settle more into our marriage.   I’m thankful for our life group where we can have have real conversations with other couples about life and love.   The study today…. “The crazy cycle”.  I feel like Greg and I are constantly stuck in the crazy cycle.  No love, no respect, no love, no respect.   It’s terribly hard to jump out of that circle.  I feel like I try my best to give the grace needed in situations.  And I know, for sure, that I have taken the high road on many occasions.   I always want to do what a Christ follower should do.  “what would Jesus do?”…. right?    Sometimes I nail it.  Sometimes I totally flounder it.    Thanks goodness for new days.   His mercies are new every morning.

10/4/21

Day 4.

Fall.  My busiest time of year.   I’ve been slowly gearing up for the 21st annual pumpkin party.   This year, Taylor’s wedding is thrown in the mix.  AND I’ve been invited to Regina’s “favorite things” party.

I feel like I’ve run around all day with nothing to show for it.  I need “fancy” shoes for the wedding.   And go figure…. None can be found.  I’ve got a dress that I’m not too sure about but Greg says, “it’s hot”.   Is that the goal of a wedding guest?   I have a feeling that the search for shoes will make me fall apart.

This favorite thing party is almost too much as well.    Telling a minimalist to buy five items to give away, to accumulate five more items is almost absurd.   Just trying to find the “right’ favorite thing has been a challenge.   I’m stuck on looking for gnomes, or bowls for popcorn.   I have to figure out some cutsie way to tie in my favorite things.   And to think I don’t have “things” that are favorite.    I don’t even like stuff.

Amelia comes for a sleepover tonight.   I’ve gathered some things for us to do, or to keep her busy.  I hope I don’t bore her to death.    Hanging gnome ornaments on my tree, repotting my hens and chicks, watching The Greatest Showman.   Maybe going out for lunch tomorrow? I dunno.

I’m only typing to say that I’ve typed today.  I’m completely zapped.    I told Kelly that I would write every day to get in the habit…. And she said, “oh, like a diary”.   That completely made my project seem like a kid project.    I suppose it is.  What do I plan to accomplish from this?

My brain is tired and I don’t have any “deep” thoughts today.   I’m kind of dreading going back to Chick-fil-a this week.   I already have the scaries for tomorrow night.   I’ve been off for two weeks!  It has been SO nice to do other things and get things done around the house.

10/7/21

Day 5.

I cheated myself out of the real day 5 and 6 of writing.   I recently watched a girl on Youtube talk about the one habit that that has changed her life.  She talked a lot about keeping promises to yourself.   We keep promises to everyone else…. But when it come to our own self…. We make promises and break them all the time.      She explained that each time we break a promise to our self, we trust ourselves less and less.    We have good intentions but don’t follow through on SO many things.   I made a promise to write 21 days in a row…. And I blew it on the 5th day.  What a loser.   If I can’t write for 5 days in a row, what can I do?    I need to power through the tiredness, the apathy, the lack of content in my head.   Just do it.  I need to establish that habit!!  21 days in a row!  I owe it to myself.   I want to be a writer, right?!

Today we met for dinner at Blue Ridge BBQ to celebrate Daniel’s 21st birthday.   He graciously came to hang out with the family.  What a funny thing that 21 years can do to a person.   He was born into the family as the one and only golden child.  The first grandbaby.  ALL of us would sit and watch him as a baby.  We would marvel at every movement and new achievement.  He was joined by many cousins and they all looked up to him.  These days, he flies under the radar.  He doesn’t seem to need, or seek, any special attention.   He’s become his own man.   So similar to Thayer, in so many ways.  I pray that he will make good, safe, decisions and live a long happy life.  I’m so proud of him for being so independent.  But sometimes I miss him.

10/8/21

Day 6.

Another day, another dollar.  Literally.   I come home exhausted…. With not much to give to Greg or to myself.   I cooked dinner.  And tonight, for the first time in forever, Greg initiated us sitting on the back patio until it got dark.   We chatted and chilled.  It was so lovely.   One evening free of the buzz of the TV in the background.   I do better without the TV.   I feel more attached to real life when we aren’t being bombarded with the fake and scripted.
I’m seriously distracted as I type this because I just remembered that a new Justin Beiber documentary is on Amazon today.   I’m going to head downstairs and see if it’s a watch for tonight.   Go figure….. the second I type out how lovely a TV free evening is….. now I’m itching to go and sit in front of the box.
There is so much other work to complete soon.   We’re on the lookout for Daniel to obtain new health insurance.   What a pain in my ass.   Greg wants to save the money on health insurance by dropping our “family” plan…. . which leaves Daniel out in the cold.  Interesting how we carried Taylor until she was 25.  And I know that finding Daniel’s insurance will lay entirely upon me to research and find.  Pain. In. My. Ass.  I don’t know much about insurance except about how much I HATE it.

10/9/21  (trying out writing prompts)

Day 7.

“Hidden away on the inside of the jacket”… was a twenty dollar bill.  Sam hadn’t worn the jacket in several years but he suddenly remembered the origin of the wrinkled bill.    It must have been at least 4 years ago when he took his girlfriend to the county carnival.    Mandy was only 14 years old at the time and had begged her parents for the opportunity to go on a date, to the carnival, with the high school junior.
Sam was so excited when her parents agreed to the date after meeting him at the mall the previous weekend.  “He seems nice enough”, her Dad said after the brief interaction in front of the Hot Topic Store.

Sam arrived at Mandy’s house a few minutes earlier than expected.  He was greeted by Mandy’s Dad, Bill.  Bill invited Sam inside and was relieved he would have a few minutes to get more acquainted with this boy.
Sam awkwardly answered questions about school and the baseball team, in which Sam was the star pitcher.

Bill had played ball in high school and reminisced about how he lost his shot to play professionally when he injured his shoulder in a sledding accident the year of the “Big snow”.
Sam knew the reality of himself going professional was slim to none.   A few colleges had been to scout him out, but he ultimately knew that he was going to choose veterinarian school.
As long as Sam could remember he wanted to work with animals.   He planned to become a vet and open his own animal hospital.   Sam’s parents owned a pet boarding business and Sam had been exposed to so many animals over the years, often being the caretaker while his parents were out of town.   He had been left in charge of a menagerie of critters one summer weekend, and surprisingly was the lone midwife to a dog who delivered 7 puppies.   Only 5 survived.    Sam was elated with the new life, and solemnly accepted the fate of the dead.    That sole experience formed a heart in Sam that always wanted to protect and save animals.

Mandy hopped down the stairs, carnival ready, wearing a blue gingham sundress and a bouncy ponytail.  She was elated to be going on a real date with Sam.   They had hung out at school and been to the pizza place, with a group of friends, a few times… but this would be the first time they were out, alone.  Upon laying eyes on Sam, sitting with her Dad, Mandy got butterflies in her stomach.   A bit of excitement, a bit of anxiety.   The thought of this being her first “real” date…. She wasn’t sure what to expect.

Mandy followed Sam out to his black Honda Civic, as Bill commented on how reliable those Hondas are… “Good ol’ Hondas…. That thing will last forever!”    Sam thought it would be a good idea to open the car door for Mandy, especially with her Dad’s watchful eye behind them.
As they pulled away from the house, Sam and Mandy waved goodbye to Bill and headed to the carnival.

The county carnival was several miles out of town and the drive gave Sam and Mandy some time to break the ice before they arrived.   The two joked about the ‘incident’ in Math class the previous day where Ian’s soda can had burst open and sprayed all over Claire’s notebook.   It was such a mess.   Sam and Mandy were so relieved it hadn’t happened to them.
Mandy asked Sam what he planned to do over the summer.   They both talked about getting summer jobs…. But Sam figured that he would just work for his parents and help out with the animals.  Summer was an especially busy time for boarding, since a lot of families took vacations in the summer months.
Mandy had already applied for a job at the ice cream truck and was having an interview the following week.   Sam joked about stopping by the ice cream truck to get pup cups for all of the dogs.

It was twilight and the lights from the carnival were glowing above the tree lines.   Sam followed the signs for “PARKING”, and parked in a crowded lot a few hundred feet from the carnival entrance.

10/10/21
Day 8.

At the entrance gate Sam rustled through his wallet and paid the $10 admission for the two.   He was planning to use his birthday money for the evening.  His grandmother gave him $100 each year for his birthday.    This was the last year he would receive the generous gift. His grandmother had passed away three months ago and Sam had decided to save the money for something special.   His grandmother would be so tickled about Mandy.   Sam was certain that the two of them would have gotten along like peas in a pod.   Sam’s grandmother had a great sense of humor, and he had already noticed subtle similarities between her and Mandy.

The carnival was full of the expected.   Game booths run by shaggy carnies, a scantily pieced together Ferris wheel and other miniature amusement park rides, food stands:  funnel cake, hotdogs, cotton candy, snow cones.   At the opposite side of the field there was a large pavilion area with a stage and live music.    A bluegrass band was playing for the evening and it gave the atmosphere a “country” feel, despite the large crowd of city people who had ventured to the grounds.

10/11/21

Day 9.

Sam and Mandy ran into some friends from school and they stopped by the hotdog stand to grab some dinner.   Sloppy chili dogs and French fries.  Mandy hoped that she wouldn’t make a mess on her new dress.   They found an empty picnic table and sat to eat.   Sam talked with the other boys about the baseball game earlier that week.  They had one by a landslide and their cockiness showed throughout the conversation.    The girls whispered aside about their new nail colors and made plans to go to the mall over the weekend.
After eating and chatting, Sam pulled Mandy to the side, to continue their evening.   The other teens headed off in the opposite direction to play skill games.      Sam lead Mandy to the Ferris Wheel.   Mandy had zero interest in riding the wobbly looking contraption but she went along with it, to seem agreeable.   The line was fairly long so they were able to people watch as they waited for their turn.

10/12/21

Day 10.

Greg and I recently watched a documentary.  It was called Social Media Dangers: Childhood 2.0   It was so discouraging and sad to hear the facts and statistics about what social media is doing to our kids.    The rates of depression, anxiety, addictions, pornography, cyber bullying, suicide, child predators, etc. etc.   I am beyond thankful that my kids are past the “impressionable” age…. But I know that they are still susceptible to all of the above.  As are we.   I know a handful of people who either never joined Facebook, or left Facebook after realizing that their mental health was being jeopardized.    I feel that people who have stepped back from social media seem to be more in touch with the people and events in real life.  They claim that they are happier and more productive.
So…. This morning I deleted my Facebook app from my phone.   I only tried to check it a few times, and was actually relieved that it wasn’t an option.   After an entire day of not mindlessly spending time on my phone, I logged in on my laptop to realize that I only had ONE notification today.   It was a notification letting me know that my sister is coming to my Pumpkin Party.    So…. I basically missed NOTHING.   I think I’m on my way to a new life, literally.     I want to be more present in the real world.  I want to use my free time intentionally.   I want to do house projects, I want to *maybe* read a book.  I want to write.    I want a better relationship with Greg.   But the kicker is:  He’s more addicted to his phone than I have ever been.  And he doesn’t realize it.  My friends don’t realize it either.  My friends…. Who suffer from mental health issues are addicted too.    I just told my friends that I’m experimenting with taking Facebook off of my phone and one of my friends basically just told me that she didn’t care.  That she’s fine with what she’s doing.  Two of them basically made excuses of saying that in their “free time”, that’s how they pass time.
I wish people could realize the trauma that they are putting themselves through.     I know I was just as blinded to my addiction as the next guy, until I suddenly have the realization.   Between the documentaries I’ve seen and also seeing people who are unplugged simply living a better life.   I want to pursue it now.   I wish I could have helped my kids create healthy habits with the internet.  In a way, I think my kids are better off than me…. But I honestly don’t know how much time they spend on social media.  I know Lucas’ video game addiction has, and will, affect him into the future.   It’s seems so normalized.
So much has changed since I was a kid.

10/13/21

Day 11.

(Censored to protect innocent people from an angry rant)  But at least:  I wrote ;)

10/14/21

Day 12.

I’m reading back through old blog posts.   My book from 2005-2007.    Stories that I have no recollection of…. Or vague memories of.   My kids were small.  Daniel was an eager learner.  Daniel was a bit of a troublemaker in preschool, but seemed to do well at all school things.  And Lucas loved to cook… even at age 4.   Daniel rode a bike early and Lucas got a bike super early.     I didn’t write about it… but I do remember that both were taught by Thayer within minutes!
I wrote several times about Thayer working late and having big work projects.   He traveled to Italy and to Spain.   One blog post mentioned it was Thayer’s first time with us in about a month.  I wrote, “I don’t know how single parents do it.”   That’s pretty fascinating.    I don’t recall him being gone so much!  I think I was probably so consumed with the kids.   I do remember an evening when I sat in the living room, waiting up for him- really late.   I remember the fear and anger…. Not sure what he was really doing out so late.
Reading these blog posts are basically reading a diary from my early years as a mother.   I worked at Target in the evenings…. For the extra money, and clearly to get a break from the kids.   When Thayer was promoted at work, I quit Target and seemed more appreciative of my time with the boys.
Those years were a lifetime ago.   A very faint memory.

10/15/21

Day 13.

I am not a shopper.   The thought of upcoming Christmas stresses me out. I hate the fact we buy gifts for people at Christmastime…. Just to buy gifts.  The pressure is usually high, and I’m the one figuring out what to give people.  Last year I wanted to boycott buying things for Greg’s people…. But he sucked, as much as I expected…. So I had to fill in the gaps.    Being a person that doesn’t like “Stuff’, it’s hard to pick the right stuff for other people to have.
I’m invited to a”fall favorite things” party at Regina’s this year.   I don’t have favorite THINGS…. I have favorite people and/or activities.   I decided upon a rather lame gift to share.   A bowl, some kind of popcorn, m&ms and a little gnome ornament.  I hope I can package them up cutsie-ish and explain that my favorite “thing” is time spent with friends.     I’m looking forward to celebrating Kelly’s birthday tomorrow night.   Friends, games, pizza and cake.  ALL of my favoritesJ

10/16/21

Day 14.

Saturday morning.   Up at 6.  Writing by 7.   I don’t get it.   It’s the weekend and I’m always up and moving like I’m going to miss something.   It is a big day though, I suppose.  Greg heads off to a football game and I work from 11-3:15.   Most importantly the girls gather tonight to celebrate Kelly’s birthday!   I’m hopeful that work will go smoothly and that I can get home to the real fun.
Fun Fact:   This month’s “theme” for my yoga practice has been “Still”…. Which basically means lots of videos about meditation.   I always thought meditation was for “new age” people, or people who practice the “religion” of yoga.   But turns out, I’ve gotten pretty good at it…. And I’m not a weirdo!  (I think).
The first video that required me to sit still was atrocious.    I fidgeted the entire time and struggled to sit and relax.   Turns out that yoga practice is just that.... practice to make perfect, I suppose.    It’s been 16 days of meditation videos mixed in with some movement flows, and today I’m proud to report that I sat upright for about 17 minutes, relaxed and zen (If I dare use that word.  Haha)  Believe it or not, the time flew by!   Interesting how 17 minutes of stillness can fly by… but 10 minutes at my job feels like hours.
Yesterday the clock read 4:09….. I proceeded to help a zillion guests and chat with my co-worker only to look at the clock which read 4:19.    Go figure.

As I sit by this dark window, on an early Saturday morning, I start to see the light peek through the trees.  I am rarely up to witness the sunrise.  Usually just waking and getting my feet on the ground and having my morning water.  I’m currently waiting for it to get a tad bit lighter so that I can go for my morning walk.   It’s interesting how quickly the sun illuminates the dark.  The yard has come alive.   I can see further from the window today because we had tree limbs cut from the tree outside.   We have several trees cut down from the edges of our wood line which seems to have made positive changes in our landscape.

10/18/21

Day 15.

Yesterday was the first fall-feeling day.  I love the fall.  I wish I would have had ONE of my weddings in the fall.   The breeze is crisp and cool in the evenings.   The sun shines differently during the days…. A feeling of heat and chill at the same time.  A fall feeling is distinctive, yet hard to explain.   I see a few of the tree leaves starting to change as I look out of the window.  Not enough to notice the color…. But if I look closely, I can tell the trees are thinking about shedding their summer growth.   I think there was a frost warning last night.  That might come as a reminder to the plants to start preparing for the winter.  Seems like summer was short this year.  I guess because I worked through it, for the first time in ages.  I can’t remember the last time I worked in the summer.    The fall has been nice, not being on a school schedule.  The seasons used to revolve around school activities… but it certainly feels less hectic this fall.   I can just focus on work, home, and upcoming party.   The pumpkin party will be celebrating 21 years on the 28th of October.   How is that even possible?   I have vowed many years to scrap the party…. But it keeps happening.  I’m not even sure people enjoy it…. But they keep coming back.  It’ll be a smaller crowd this year.  Partly because I’ve lost two friends and because Jamie can’t come this year.   Lucas will be out of town, and Ana.   Maybe a smaller crowd will be more relaxed?

10/20/21

Day 16.

I’m trying to become more disconnected with social media.   It’s been one week since I deleted the Facebook app from my phone.  I haven’t missed it. AT. ALL.    I checked in via my laptop a couple of times to see if I missed any group updates.    I whittled down my groups to just two that I need to actually check on:  Lifegroup and Ladies Night.
When I deleted FB, I also cut back on the people I follow on Instagram.  It’s just a handful of people now and they don’t post often.  BUT… since the app is still on my phone, I tend to pick up the phone to check Instagram, Email and my work Slack app.    I hope that I can curb those tendencies over time.
I do find that I have more time to think, or do be more productive.
I have also stopped listening to music during my daily walks.   My head seems clearer and I am noticing the nature sounds around me.   Trees bustling in the breeze.  Birds chatting in the morning air.  The complete quiet has given me more encouragement to pray during my walk and think of friends and family.    I hope this quiet time can become even more precious than before.
There was a recent video on YouTube that questioned whether or not YouTube is a social media.   Since I do spend a significant amount of time on YouTube each day, I was curious.   The gal in the video explained that in her opinion, YouTube isn’t true social media because it doesn’t involve the scrolling through of content.  (preselected content in a feed).   In YouTube, however, one must actually select the content they wish to watch.  For instance….. I tend to watch videos from my favorite creators (minimal mom and yoga with Adriene)…. But I also get on specific topic kicks.  Lately, I’ve been watching videos about people who have given up social media.  Haha.  Go figure.   I tend to choose educational or informative videos over vague random entertainment.   YouTube is my go-to if I have time to watch a television show.  I would rather watch a few opinion pieces about a topic than to land on an hour of mindless television.
Anywho.   I really hope I can continue this pull-back from social media.   So far, so good…..except that I continue to pick up my phone to check the few apps I still have on hand.    I hope to create better habits with that as time goes on.  Baby steps, I suppose.

habit forming

I’ve read a few books about writing and forming habits.   Simple advice:  Just write…. One bird at a time.   One sentence, one page.  Establish a habit…. 5 minutes a day.

Simple.
I’ve created a writing room.   I’ve added plants, a clock.  I admire the room often. I feel the urge to sit and type.
Simple.
But what in the world would I write about?!
Death?  Life?  Friendship?  Fact?  Fiction?

I sit tonight in front of the dark window and feel the relief at my fingertips to just be doing it.    No agenda, just the motion.  I guess that’s how the habit starts.
There’s always an underlying hesitation when I want to start the habit.   I don’t want to be judged by the REAL writers, the ones who are poetic and mysterious.   I already hear their voices, “She needs to stop whining about it, and follow through.   Write.  Take a class.  Go to workshops.  Learn the secret art of writing.”

The thought of being taught to write properly is a turn off.   I write to get things out of my head.  And by the looks of my blog posts recently….. There is not much in my head.  That’s a scary thought.

I want to have thoughts and notions so important that they scratch at my skull until I get them onto paper.

The people who really know me don't often know my inner thoughts until I get them out in print.
That’s another source of hesitation.     How can I write about things so easily but not be able to express myself to those who are closest to me?   I can’t even speak coherent sentences.
Is expressing myself through writing being fraudulent to how I express myself in real life?   I want to be the same person from all angles.    If I write about life, I want to be consistent in how I portray myself.

Of course, I could attempt writing fiction but I don’t consider myself creative enough for that.

I like to write from experience.   I like to write what God is teaching me.   I’ve said it before that I have more “material” when I’m deep into learning something with Jesus.
Which- now- this entire blubbery mess gives me pause.   Where am I with Jesus?     Am I learning nothing these days?!

Actually, I have learned a little something over the past few months.     I’ve been hiding this little gem away, wondering if it is important enough to share with anyone.
Here it is:
I’ve been doing yoga and walking each morning…..because I CAN.
I’m walking every day, BUT no longer for exercise!
Let that sink in for a moment.
This is really a shocker because I hyper focused on exercise for YEARS!  Exercise and weight loss have HAUNTED me for years!   These past few months I walk for the simple reason that God has given me the ability to do it, and I don’t want to waste that blessing.     Every morning I think about the people who don’t have the physical ability to walk, or the people who choose not to be in God’s creation.    And then I think about how very blessed I am to be able to use my legs and spend that intentional time with God each morning.    The very shift in my reasoning has made my mornings more enjoyable and the “exercise and weight loss” obsession has faded away.
I’m hopeful this somewhat drastic shift of perspective will be a habit that will reap long term benefits, spiritually and physically.     How could it not?!   I’ve got the best of everything each morning.
----------
Well, I just exceeded an entire page, in a brief session, in front of the dark window.   They say it takes 21 days to create a habit.
Day 1.
