turkey week

just a brief update for this week (and then I'll be taking a vacation from blogging till after thanksgiving)

I got to meet the triplets yesterday!! They are beautiful boys. And really good babies. I'm looking forward to visiting again soon. M and C seem to be doing super well. They are, and will be, super parents.

Today L's preschool is having a Thanksgiving feast. The kids have prepared a song to sing and the families gather for lunch afterward. It will be a nice break from our usual school routine.
There are only two days of school this week for D as well. that's nice.

This week, in general, is a nice break from our regular routine.
I only have a few errands to run before we take off to visit Granny J in SC. I feel like our mini vacation is already starting.
looking forward to seeing T's family and relaxing for a few days.

We were able to see my mom and dad this past saturday. They came up for a visit and took us out for lunch. It was good to hang out and chat with them.

I hope that everyone has a great thanksgiving!

I just tossed our family letter into the mail today and it occured to me that some people may actually be curious enough to check out this blog site.
So...if it's your first time reading... welcome.
Please check in often. I will try to continually update about the family. And you will also get a dose of my own thoughts about random day to day things.
I usually update every few days.
Thanks for your initial interest in us :-) Hope you check in again soon!

another thought

I received the following forwarded email from my mom today. It's another reminder of how God works in our lives.

Malachi 3:3 says: "He will sit as a refiner and purifier of silver."

This verse puzzled some women in a Bible study and they wondered what this statement meant about the character and nature of God.

One of the women offered to find out the process of refining silver and get back to the group at their next Bible Study.

That week, the woman called a silversmith and made an appointment to watch him at work. She didn't mention anything about the reason for her
interest beyond her curiosity about the process of refining Silver.

As she watched the silversmith, he held a piece of silver over the fire and let it heat up. He explained that in refining silver, one needed to hold the silver in the middle of the fire where the flames were hottest as to burn away all the impurities.

The woman thought about God holding us in such a hot spot; then she thought again about the verse that says: "He sits as a refiner and purifier of silver." She asked the silversmith if it was true that he had to sit there in front of the fire the whole time the silver was being refined.

The man answered that yes, he not only had to sit there holding the silver, but he had to keep his eyes on the silver the entire time it was in the fire. If the silver was left a moment too long in the flames, it would be destroyed.

The woman was silent for a moment. Then she asked the silversmith, "How do you know when the silver is fully refined?"

He smiled at her and answered, "Oh, that's easy -- when I see my image in it."

That's cool.
Happy Friday!

mountains

There is an Andrew Peterson song that refers to the mountain ranges on the ocean floor.
It’s so amazing to me that there are huge mountains under that water that only God can see. He knows every inch and detail of their formations and he is in complete control of what the ocean does to them and how they grow or crumble.
It’s a great reminder of how God is in involved in our daily lives. If he can take such care over the unseen in the bottom of the ocean… shouldn’t we realize the intricate involvement that he has in our own lives?!

As I have been trying to organize my calendar for the next few months, I feel like I am moving my own personal mountains to get every event scheduled and taken care of.
Today may be a good time to remind myself that God is going to move my mountains and form my days to fit into His plan, not just my own idea of how things should be.
I should probably take a breather and see what he has in store. I know that is easier said than done… especially since I am such a maniac about planning.
I just need to remember to be flexible when God may have other things planned for my days.

gearing up for friday

I just got home from work and thought that I should blog before I head into my weekend.

Tomorrow I’ll be going to the elementary school to see my “book buddy”. I’ve been volunteering Wednesday and Friday mornings at the elementary school , basically as a tutor for a 2nd grader who needs some extra help with reading. It has been fun but also challenging.
I realize that I don’t particularly know anything about the English language.
I’m starting to wonder how any of us learned to read. I have found myself learning things right alongside my buddy. And I’m amazed at the times that I’ve been unable to explain why some words are pronounced certain ways.
The kids are encouraged to sound words out, but what do you do with words that have silent letters, and words that follow different rules? How do you determine which letters are silent or not? And how do I explain the rules behind that?
I should probably get my own tutor.
All that to say: I’m really enjoying the time with my buddy and I’m also learning a lot. While I'm there, I follow a lesson plan that the reading specialist has prepared. So don't worry!! The kid is actually learning something! :-)
I’m hoping that I can grasp onto some ideas and activities that will help my own kids learn to read.
D is doing pretty well with sight words and the sounds of the letters. I think he’ll be reading by this spring. At least that’s the plan.

Tomorrow night I am going on a women’s retreat with the ladies from my church. I am excited about the time away and the chance to build friendships with those gals. It should be a fun time.
The boys at my house will enjoy a “men’s weekend”. They will probably have a great time as well.

Always looking forward to the weekends…
