Today marks the day that I am officially 50.5 pounds lighter than my heaviest weight. It's been about a 20 month journey overall, with some ups and downs in between. (and still en route!)
The trick is certainly mind over matter with every detail. I have finally found the routine that works best for me and I am feeling better than I have in years. My habits have gradually changed and I'm starting to feel comfortable in my skin again. Such a blessing.
Some folks connect my thinner self to the fact that I'm in love. Yes... I'm in love with a good man...and very happy.... but my journey to get healthy started long before the man entered the picture. I wanted this for myself. I think he just came along at the opportune time.
This summer has been an excellent time for me to date and get to know my new guy. He gets along well with the boys and I'm certain he is an excellent fit for our family. I'm excited to see how this current chapter is written. (I hope it doesn't end with a burning house) ;)
The boys have had bursts of busyness this summer. Each have attended camps, and Daniel is currently serving in Mexico with the church youth group. We've done some day activities as a family and they've also had days of doing nothing. (which apparently teen boys like to do...nothing.)
I have enjoyed great times with my friends this summer.
Laughter, lots of laughter. (and a few tears in there as well)
I'm seriously surrounded by the best people. They are a special blessing that I never want to take for granted.
So, our current state is pretty chill. Family, friends, love, happiness, all the mushy stuff. As of today I'd call this summer a success.

end of summer.
Ha. Summer. I vaguely remember it. But it was fast. Probably the fastest. Ever.
Rewinding to the start of summer.... Recall that nifty screen time chart that I made?
That was a joke.
And... my goal to drop my last 30 pounds this summer?
Nonsense. We had way too much fun. I actually gained 7 pounds. My "summer weight" as I call it.
And remember how I always rave about my summer sleep schedule?
Well...apparently I'm a grown up now!.... because I was up and moving by 7am most days and on my morning walk by 8am. hm.
Please don't ask what we did this summer.... because I'm not really sure. The days were full. There were lots of people. A few day trips. A few over night trips. And everything was tied up nicely last week when we vacationed at Topsail Island with my family.
We had a great week at the beach! I think that everyone enjoyed their time together. I really enjoyed the lack of agenda and being "unplugged" for several days. I enjoyed watching the boys boogie board and not get eaten by sharks.
I liked being away from reality so much that I didn't want to come home. Seriously. I had to pep talk myself all the way home. The best motivation that I could come up with was that "the cats will be glad to see us".
And they were.
This week is full of appointments and preparations for school. The boys will be slumming off to 8th and 9th grade on Monday-- while I enjoy a couple of weeks before preschool starts.
As always I am starting to crave our school routine. This year, mainly for a more predictable eating schedule. But basically because we all function better on a schedule.
This time of year usually throws me for a curve. With the start of school and work, as well as remembering Thayer's death anniversary and his birthday. Everything kinda gets smashed in there together.
I was starting to feel anxious today. With all of that stuff on my mind a new concern popped up.
(Not sure if I have written about this before, but Mr. Q was diagnosed with cancer this past January.) The vet told me a "few months". I figured that he would be gone before we had our beach vacation. I had pictured a summer to grieve the death of our cat. Amazingly.... he's still here.
Just yesterday I realized that his tumor has grown. And then it hit me that this fall might be our season to grieve. I'm not prepared for that. I'm not prepared for missing work, and school, to bury a cat. I'm not prepared for this kind of thing to happen on top of everything else that this season brings. Our schedule is too full to add death.
ha. I sound so absurd. Who's ever ready for death?
Though I have been praying that God will take Mr. Q sooner than later. (and that I won't have to make the decision).
Lucas is still wishing we could help Mr. Q.... and I have repeatedly explained that Mr. Q is dying.
wow. This is gonna be so hard.
whew. deep breath.
We never know what tomorrow will bring.
I just hope we make it smoothly through the next few weeks.

whatev
Week 2 of kids being out of school.
Last week I posted this list on my fridge:
It's not going so well.
Daniel never reads... because he doesn't want screen time.... (except late at night to watch a movie). Daniel is outside ALL day....
but now Lucas is starting to catch on that I'm not consistent with Daniel and the list.
Daniel seems to understand my ideal summer would include locking them outside and telling them to be home in time for dinner. He's getting pretty good at this concept.
Lucas on the other hand manages to wake up early and complete most of this list before I'm even out of the shower... so that he can start the video games. The first three days of "creative" outdoor activities included these winners:
(Clearly I'm very patient)
Then there's me.
I have spent the last two days binge watching Chasing Life on Netflix. Clearly not setting an example for these boys.
But I have to remind myself that it's summer! I think we all deserve some days to CHILL!
We are coming up on days and weeks that are filled with activities. I'm hoping that the screen time dilemna will fix itself as we are out and about this summer.
Our spontaneous camping trips and lake trips should help a lot.
I thought about implementing time restrictions, or certain times of day that I would allow the screens. (You know... Actually being a parent and having rules)
But my reality says that every day this summer will be different for us and it would be nearly impossible to stay consistent.
We'll see what shakes out.

wanna be housewife
disclaimer: another obnoxious post about not working.
The snobbery of it. I couldn't believe my own thoughts!
Yesterday morning, I sat on my "new" patio, Bible in hand, looking out into my yard, listening to the birds chirp, admiring the sunlight...... I took a deep breath, let out a long exhale, and thought to myself, "I am destined to be a housewife."
What?!
My inner being screamed it out, though I'm pretty sure that society would shun me for such a thought.
I would rock being a housewife.
Yesterday was my first full taste of sending the kids off to school and then doing stuff. I was super productive. I took a morning walk and ran several errands.
God was pouring his blessings onto me and I thanked him as I noticed that there was NO line at the post office, NO line at Wal-mart. Things were going swimmingly well....
until...
I managed to lock my keys AND my phone in the car. (Such a humbling moment when you have to ask the clerk at the store if she has a phone you can borrow). Thankfully Awesome Lisa came to my rescue and I continued my day with shopping and lunch with friends.
Today has been much of the same, except I didn't lock myself out of the car. That's a bonus.
I have had the time to walk many miles over the past few days and I hope this is a reflection of how my summer will be. This is my summer to drop the last of my weight. This is the summer I take time to walk, get exercise, and take care of myself.
Or.... as the neighbor kid would say, "get a sexy body".
I'm feeling healthier and MUCH more energetic.
Imagine how well I could keep up this routine if I were a housewife?! After the daily exercise, I could run errands, cook, clean, do laundry. It would be excellent!
I don't need to marry for money. (though I often joke about finding my 'sugar daddy') I just need to marry someone who is content to live primarily on one income.
Thayer and i managed.... and I know that there is some lucky man out there, maybe with some school aged kids who would love to have the mom at home to take care of them after school and during the summer.
Or heck... someone with older teenagers who need vague supervision like my own.
I'd also love the opportunity to volunteer around the community. I've always thought that it would be fun to help out at the hospital.
I'm currently taking applications for the Mr.
In the meantime I think I'll perfect the housewife gig this summer. Practice makes perfect!

ugh
spoiler alert : whiny post.
I just had a minor fit of panic. For no particular reason.
I explained to the kids, again, for the millionth time, that the house is a reflection of my mood.... or vice versa... I've never really figured that out.
But the real reason is that it's THAT time of year again.
The carefree summer is evaporating before my eyes.
Reality bites.
The boys register for school on Wednesday.
Bedtimes and alarms will have to be set next week. argh.
There are appointments and calls that I've put off all summer.
There's the yearly appoinment with my financial advisor... where there is nothing to show for how I've spent money... except a wider ass and spoiled children.
I have to wrap my mind around working at preschool again. (someone asked me about my class yesterday... and I said "what class?) :)
The worst part is that this transitional period is in the shadow of Thayer's death anniversary and his 'would-be' 44th birthday.
This week I'll be registering the kids, where the forms never fail to ask for parental information.
And every year.... those blank lines throw me a curve. Do I leave it blank? Do I write 'deceased'? Do I give any explanation to teachers?
It sucks.
But every year I get through it. And the boys get through it.
And in a few weeks I'll be very adamant about not throwing a Halloween party..... while I'm out shopping for prizes.
Such is the circle of a year.
My. How time flies.

a day in my life
It's been over a week since we returned early from our vacation.
The at-home vacation days filled up quickly. I was able to meet with friends, have a cookout with my family, and spend many hours at the skate park with the boys.
This week we have visited the park, gone camping, and ventured to play in Otter Creek.
Today was our first full day at home. I intended to clean all day and do all of the stuff that I have neglected for so long.
Upon waking at 10.... (hehe).... I dove into the piles of stuff laying around the house. For the most part things have been returned to their places. Lucas woke up and "cleaned" his room.
Within a few hours I decided that running errands also sounded like a good idea. We dropped off things at people's houses and spent way too much money at Target.
I intended to come home and clean the bathrooms and mop the floors. But why waste time on such things when we don't expect to have company until Sunday?? If I wanted clean bathrooms, I would have invited someone over for dinner tonight! ;)
Instead of cleaning, I sat to finally finish writing Thank You cards for the gifts from my preschoolers..... back in May. I normally don't wait this long to write thank you notes. I have forgotten how tedious it is to write 15 hand written notes. Even short notes. Exhausting!
I suppose I have been spoiled with typing. I enjoy typing :)
That's the update as of thursday afternoon.
We don't have much planned for the weekend. Just more of the same.
I am loving my summer and I hope the next month will creep by.

ideal summer
It has taken me a few weeks to work out the kinks in my summer 'ideal'. The boys and I have had heated discussions on what our summer days should look like. Apparently our city pool which is Olympic size has become "too small" for my kids. (i.e., they are spoiled and ungrateful).
The one thing we have agreed on is camping, visiting the lake (so far, the lake still seems big to them.), and having late night campfires.
These are all acceptable to me. And actually very fun for all of us. So in order to keep video games and TV at bay, I'm encouraging these activities. I'm going all out.
The most fabulous news is: I have recently achieved my dream of syncing our summer sleep patterns.
We are one of the fortunate families who can host campfires until 10pm, sleep until 9:30-10am, wash and repeat.
In just a few years the 'real world' will be a reality to all three of us.
Until then I'm gonna let them be kids.
And please don't call me before 10am.

I tried to explain to my kids that this kind of summer is rare these days. very rare.

one week
spoiler: this is a post about how I don't have to work in the summer. So all you haters, back off. ;)
One week. I've been on my summer vacation for approximately one week. And I have started to question my meaning in life. What is my purpose?
Seriously. I just chatted with another single gal who is off during the summers and she brought up the exact same topic......so I know I'm not totally crazy.
Apparently when one stops working..... the free time can become detrimental.
I made an effort to laze around last week. (because I'm supposed to deserve a break!)
I slept in some, took naps, read an entire book, (yes! I read!), went out to lunch with friends.
In my free time I obsessed about cat hair in the house and contemplated what 'that weird smell' in the kitchen is.
And in the remaining free time I pondered what I'm supposed to do with my life.
Turns out that free time is unnerving.
Last week, my prayer was that God would make this a summer of clarity. I prayed that I would be able to relax, enjoy my family and friends, and find clarity in what God wants me to do next.
Today I thought about selling my house and moving to the country.
I've always told the kids that "if I get married again we will buy some land in the country".
"If I get married again".
And then it occured to me.... why the heck put my dreams on hold while waiting for some man?!
If that man doesn't come along, what kind of regrets would I have?
If that man doesn't come along, what kind of regrets would I have?
I feel like getting a Realtor and just having someone keep an eye out for my dream house. Not that I would jump and move next month.... but if something amazing came along....
why not?
Then again, we're happy here. So why rock the boat?
At this point, I could go either way.
Really. My life choices are wide open. I'll be curious to see how things play out.
Really. My life choices are wide open. I'll be curious to see how things play out.
I've got another week ahead of me before my kids get out of school.
My goal is to seriously clean the house. Chances are.... that's not gonna happen....

5 years
The five year mark has come and gone. And ya know what? I made our lives so busy that I think I missed it.
I didn't miss thinking about Thayer. I didn't miss thinking about that night that changed our lives. I didn't miss the thought that 'five years' has been a long time. I didn't miss thinking about how so many people were impacted by his death. I didn't miss contemplating, in detail, that fateful day.
But I did miss crying about it this year.
I knew that I was planning lots of activity so that I wouldn't sit at home and be sad. But it appears that I planned SO much activity that I am exhausted!!
Prior to the death anniversary, we had Thayer's grandmother come to stay for eleven days. It was nice to have her here and we enjoyed looking through all of my photo albums and remembering 'back then'. The visit was nice, but also tiring for all of us.
Then, the boys and I spent a long day in c-ville visiting with our friends and catching up. I love being up there with many of my favorite people.... especially those who knew, and loved, Thayer.
On the eve of the anniversary, we went camping with my family. (Interesting how much I enjoy camping, yet we don't do it often enough). We spent August 16th at the lake with my parents, my sisters and their families. My parents had balloons for the kids to release in memory of Thayer.
We returned home that night to spend time with family friends, (Thayer's bestie), who stayed with us for several days. That weekend included a girl's night out with other 'out of town' friends and many fun filled moments with friends.
This past week, we jumped right into registration and school stuff and then hit the road for a long weekend in Williamsburg. One last fling before reality hits.
We made it back to town just in time to gather with our lifegroup and pray for the kids and their upcoming school year.
Laundry is brewing and I thought it would be a good idea to debrief a bit before I wipe our summer slate clean.
Tomorrow is the first day of school and work.
I'm actually looking forward to sending the boys away in the morning, regaining a sense of routine, and having some 'down' time in the afternoons. I'm thinking it will be nice to have a vacation from the vacation.
Although I'm already missing my summer sleep schedule :(

freedom
I'm typing as a last resort while the kids are out roaming. The highlights of my day have included paying bills and cleaning the outdoor trash can.
We returned on Saturday from an amazing, long, week at Smith Mountain Lake State Park. That place has become one of my favorite places on the planet. I would love to take up residence in one of those cabins and stay there all summer. Mostly because I don't want to be at home... with home responsibilities.
It was so nice to get away from it all. I enjoyed sitting lakeside and the boys enjoyed playing with cousins and friends.
One of the perks about being away from home is also being 'unplugged'. I dare say that it was one of the most pleasant weeks I've had in a long time. Lots of uninterrupted time with my boys. No need to check email or facebook. No desire to Google anything. No shackles of a computer addiction.
I feel lighter and happier.

Summer!
Our summer has officially arrived. No school, no work. All fun.
Last weekend, before school was out... Daniel competed in his first ever skateboarding competition. We're totally new to that scene and it was interesting. I was SO proud that he got out there and did his thing in front of spectators. He ranked second place in the Beginner category. I hope this will give him the confidence to get out there in the future. He's pretty awesome.
This past Thursday was the last day of school!! And the last day of elementary school for our family. Kind of sad to say farewell to the people who have played such an important role in my kids' lives. Those teachers and staff have been such an encouragement to me, as a single mom. They have done their part as 'the village' for my kids..... It really DOES take a village ;)
So-- as of last Friday... S U M M E R freedom!!! yay!
The boys jumped in feet first with an awesome hiking/camping trip with dudes from church. I am so thankful that especially one guy from church has involved my boys with serious 'man' stuff. This hiking trip seemed huge to me.... and yet they went... and LOVED every minute! Both boys were excited to share the details and the happenings from the weekend. They were quick to inform me that it was all stuff that I would have freaked out about. I suppose that's why it was so fun. The 'shock your mom' factor plays a huge role in male development, I'm sure.
I'm so happy for them and I hope that it can be a recurring thing.
On a side note: I completed a daunting task today. I have finalized all the trip planning for our trip to Colorado this summer. Plane tickets in hand, car rental reserved, and several hotels reserved! I Also have an entire page of addresses to several skate parks along our route! (score cool points for Mom!)
This is the first ever "big" trip that I've had to plan entirely on my own. I think that Thayer would be proud. We will be going to visit with his family. I'm looking forward to seeing my brother-in-law, nephews and niece... as well as catching up with extended family. I'm so excited! Now that the planning is set, I can sit back and enjoy my free days.
Second side note: Tomorrow we are babysitting my sister and niece. My sister is doing fabulous following her surgery. I am thrilled that God has worked wonders during her recovery!
Good news all around this week :-)
Last weekend, before school was out... Daniel competed in his first ever skateboarding competition. We're totally new to that scene and it was interesting. I was SO proud that he got out there and did his thing in front of spectators. He ranked second place in the Beginner category. I hope this will give him the confidence to get out there in the future. He's pretty awesome.
This past Thursday was the last day of school!! And the last day of elementary school for our family. Kind of sad to say farewell to the people who have played such an important role in my kids' lives. Those teachers and staff have been such an encouragement to me, as a single mom. blah
I've had almost a month of almost type-able moments. Evenings when I wanted to debrief.... But I chose to watch Netflix and turn off my brain.
I have slowly gone MIA. This past Sunday I finally shut down. Rain had canceled skateboarding plans....so I laid in bed from 2-5pm with little care of what was going on around me.
This past month has been uneventful, as I remember. I know that we were busy most of the month and then things came to a halt. I look forward to free time yet I don't quite know what to do with it. I am thrilled when the kids request to visit the skate park. I am able to escape the house for a few precious hours. It's been confirmed that I am not a homebody.
I've struggled with Lucas this month. We are currently on an up-swing. I think I finally have a hold on consequences and limits that are helpful in controlling his outbursts. But as you know, it's a bumpy ride with this kid.
He and I played a Harry Potter board game tonight. It was such a pleasure to spend some one-on-one time with him. He thrives in those moments.
The anticipation of summer break brings a small breath of excitement to each day. This school year has been the fastest yet.
We are looking forward to a vacation out west this summer. We plan to visit with Thayer's family. If only I could convince myself to book the tickets. Maybe tomorrow.
Netflix is calling.

it's beginning
Summer life has arrived. (please, no mean comments about how much you hate me)
I enjoyed a super duper cabining trip with my friends this past weekend and jumped right in to 'summer' today with my boys.
We had grand plans to hit the local pool but we awoke to rain and cloudy skies.
Both boys asked to go to the barber shop!!! They are amazingly cute (as always)... but there is now a bonus of actually seeing their faces! :-)
After their time at the barber shop we made a huge trek to walmart and target to stock up on food and supplies. I intend to eat at home this summer. Well, mostly at home.
With the pool on their minds all day, the boys convinced me to take them swimming at 3pm. I managed to sit in my bathing suit, covered by a towel and watch my boys swim.... in the rain. They had a blast.
Home for a dinner of Nachos and a few episodes of Man Vs. Wild.
Off to bed early so I could appease my facebook and blogging addiction.
All in all a great day.

on being 35
The best gift was that they came up with these ideas on their own!
I love having capable, creative kids!
I was also surprised by visits, phone calls, cards, and fun phone messages. Thanks to everyone who made me feel loved on my birthday :)
Another birthday gift was watching Lucas finally having his cast removed. The past six weeks have been long weeks. He has missed field trips, family trips and pool parties.
Yesterday was the last day of school and I am SO glad that he can start summer off with two arms that can swim.
The cast removal was much worse than I had imagined. His arm was very sore and creepy feeling from being immobile for so long. Fortunately after my birthday dinner, and nice soak in the tub, he was feeling better. His next goal will be to regain some muscle and movement in his arm.
Anywho.
Summer has officially begun! There are no vacation plans on the calendar, but I am slowly adding various day trips to the mix and I'm looking forward to visiting with some friends near and far.

Bring on the summer!
This past weekend has been a taste of what summer could be like around our house. The house remained 'clean' after I hosted a ladies night... so I didn't need to spend the weekend cleaning! The boys were 'around' and things were really laid back. At one point, I looked around the house... realized that I didn't have anything to do.... and went outside to read!! That is unheard of!
I have told the kids that if we simply put away something after we use it, the house would remain fairly 'picked-up' and I won't have to spend alot of time piddling around this summer. A nice idea, in theory.
I am officially done with work for the summer. I realize that I am out of work for THREE months. A huge blessings, I know.
I am psyched!
We don't have any vacation plans this year but I am hoping to be involved with the kids alot here at home. I have high hopes to take them camping, ride bikes, take them to the skatepark and to the city pool. We have also decided to have game night as often as possible.
We started a game of Dino-Opoly last night. I expected it to be drawn out over a period of several weeks.... but we finished it tonight when I went bankrupt and Daniel had a pile of cash the size of my head. Tomorrow night, we start the Game of Life. That should be interesting.
I am looking forward to our family time this summer. Bring it on!

1st day of summer
Tomorrow is the first day of summer. And I'm hoping that it will be a fresh start at summer for our family.
Sure, we've already vacationed, I know. And it was amazing.
But I have been looking forward to those lazy days when the only decisions I have to make are 'pool' or 'movie'.
Tomorrow, maybe, we can start with that kind of summer.
After nine weeks of basement and flooring remodeling, I feel like our house is finally ours to take possession of. It turned out to be a rather mind consuming thing to have contractors around all of the time.
The work was supposed to roll right into the kitchen but I decided to take a break... emotionally and financially.
This week, I've scheduled a few appointments and I'd like to cut down a few things that have been hanging over my head.
Then, I'm set.
So. Father's Day just came and went. Each year since Thayer's death, I tend to tell my boys that we will put our focus on Papa (my Dad), since he plays such an important role in our lives.
Leading up to Father's Day, I kept asking the boys if they had any feelings... good or bad... about Father's Day. They didn't seem swayed in either direction. They have been pretty apathetic to the fact that their Father isn't around.
Yet I read SO many articles online that focus on the fact that kids are crushed on Father's Day if their father is dead.
I sometimes wonder if my kids have any emotions at all.
I know that Father's Day will continue to come each year and that it may mean something more to them as they grow older. As for now... I try not to worry about their elusive feelings.
I sure could have used Thayer this week when the boys and I had an impromptu 'sex talk' in the car.
That was humorous.

fishing camp
Last week, upon my search for a fishing experience for my boys…
They were invited to attend the Fishing Camp at
One Body In Christ Ministries. This invitation was a huge, unexpected blessing for my kids.
So this past week, the boys were able to enjoy a week of fishing… and ultimately a week full of “boy” stuff.
This, accompanied by lessons on the armor of God, made for a great summer experience for the kids.
Thanks to Dave and Angela at OBIC!! I am so encouraged by their love of people and their desire to share Christ with the community. Please check them out and think about supporting their ministry!
While they were fishing it up... I managed to breeze through an entire kid-free week by running errands, meeting up with friends, and helping my sister paint. It's amazing how quickly time passes.
The kids were at camp most days from 8:30-5:30 so I got a taste of what it would be like to have my kids in full time day care. It was kinda sad. We probably only saw each other for 2.5 hours each day. But some of that time was spent at karate class, or they were out with the neighborhood kids before bedtime.
It was a great week overall... but I'm not sure if it would be enjoyable on an ongoing basis. I think I'm becoming a softie in my old age :)
The hot weather this weekend has allowed for us to have some "recovery" time. Yesterday we lounged around at my parent's house and enjoyed a meal with the family.
Summer is coming to an end too quickly. I think we'll make the most of what free time we have left...

52 days
My kids needed to know how many days before school started so that they could figure out how much of their summer homework they would need to do each day.
I'm amazed that we have 52 more days of freedom! (and that's just until registration.)
They have been out of school for 2 weeks but I feel like we've accomplished a summer's worth of activities already!
It's been an exciting whirlwind of activity.
We've been to the pool several times, a ballgame, karate, the lake, cookouts, the drive-in, hung out with family, visited friends, etc.
The great thing is that the three of us have been getting along wonderfully!!!
I realize that being out of school and work has done wonders for our attitudes.
I really hope that this summer will be a time of healing and that we can ease back into the school routine gracefully in the fall.
All three of us had meltdowns at some point today. It had been anticipated. (see post above) It is clear that tomorrow will be mandatory naptime for everyone. We'll rest up for the full week ahead of us.
More fun in the sun :-)
