I have always stuck to the thought that using plastics in a microwave is probably what caused cancer. And probably just the microwaves themselves.
More recently I have come across emails that support the info about plastics that are heated or frozen. When the plastic container, or plastic wrap is heated, it releases some kind of chemical that is harmful.
T has started to become convinced and has been taking his lunch leftovers in glass and ceramic dishes. Good for him.
I ran across another article today at work. I’ll print it just for fun:
Is Plastic Affecting Our Fertility?
The findings: Bisphenol A (BPA), a chemical in plastics that mimics estrogen, causes health problems in animals at far lower doses than most people are exposed to every day.
What you need to know: Polycarbonate, the hard plastic that contains BPA, is found in many products, including baby bottles and the inside coating of food cans. Heating and repeated washing can cause leaching, and significant levels of the chemical have been measured in humans. Of the 115 animal studies reviewed in a recent Environmental Health Perspective article, 94 showed that even small amounts of BPA can cause infertility problems, hyperactivity, altered immune function, and early sexual maturation. Plastics makers maintain their products are safe (of the 11 industry-sponsored studies, none found evidence of harm), but there are efforts to ban BPA from children’s goods. Frederick vom Saal, PhD, the paper’s lead author, calls BPA “ a poster chemical for ADHD” and recommends avoiding foods sterilized in the can, such as tomatoes (“massive amounts of BPA,” he says). Also be cautious using clear plastic baby bottles- find out more at environmentcalifornia.org.
I checked out the website. I put the word “plastic” in the search area and several articles are there.
This is just another interesting thing to think about.
I’m sure that there are a ton of things to find, if I took the time to Google it. I have a feeling that they will link lots of diseases to this type of stuff in the future. Think about it… we are a generation that has been raised on a ton of man made chemicals.
Did you know that some folks are already finding the faults in the Splenda product?? I must I must say that I haven’t bought Splenda because I figured that they would find it faulty just like Nutrasweet and Aspartame. You just can’t go around altering things with chemicals and call it healthy.
This is kind of turning into my soapbox.
