Here I am, after only a year and a half of employment, gladly burning the ships, again. I stewed over my situation these past few months, and I couldn't be happier with my decision to resign.
I've told everyone that there is probably a much longer discussion to be had about finding my purpose and having a job with meaning.
But in simple terms, I think I just got tired of peddling chicken to people addicted to MSG.
I left without having another plan in place.
I am fortunate enough to have a very capable husband and provider that allows me to have some freedom in choosing what comes next. Last night I jokingly mentioned to him that I feel like I want to be one of those 40 year old kids in the basement who are waiting for the "right" job to come along. I LOVE being a housewife and socialite. I want to take my time and find something that I can be passionate about.
But the truth is.... after only three days of being jobless I am uneasy. I know Greg wants me to work somewhere.... not only for my sanity (because I need to get out of the house each day)... but also to fund my social activities (when I leave my house each day).
It's a catch 22. :)
I'm not a fan of uncertainty and I've been a antsy not knowing what to expect each day.
I put in an application last week and was just getting ready to check on that status when I received a phone call from another guy I talked to a few weeks ago.
Looks like I'll be clocking in to try something entirely new on Monday morning at 10am.
The only thing this new job has in common with CFA is that people are always dying to get there.
I'm excited to see if this new opportunity will be a good fit.
More to come....

year end
I never completed that 21 days of writing. But the 21st Annual Pumpkin Party, Taylor's wedding and Regina's Favorite Things Party all came and went. Good times with all of it.
Greg and I at Taylor and Logan's wedding. October 30,2021
I took the time in the last months to read back through ALL of my past blog posts (that I have published in several bound books, dating from 2005-2019.) I am SO thankful to have those words in print. There were so many moments and stories about my kids that I didn't remember AT ALL! I 'm so glad that I have written evidence of the years past.
Sadly there was plenty of entries with evidence of why my kids would need therapy as adults. yikes. (Reading back through those posts.... I realize that I am NOT the same person that I used to be. And I also wish I had written more about the positive things in our lives.)
Fortunately, both boys seem to be doing fairly well as young adults and I'm thankful that God got them through some really rough times with their crazy mom.
December:
Decorating the Christmas tree was especially hard this year. (Thanks, Greg, for taking on the task, and my whining). The ornaments of my previous life are still strewn in our ornament box.... and I was faced with lots of memories that I wasn't ready for. (Don't worry....I'm making plans to organize and divide ornaments between the boys as we un-decorate this week)
Turns out that we had a lovely Christmas eve. The step-kids came to visit and share a slideshow of their wedding pictures. Daniel came over in the evening and and we had a video call with Lucas! We were able to catch up with him for almost two hours. We chatted and opened gifts together. It was almost as if he were in the room. :)
So thankful for technology!
Christmas day consisted of lunch with my family and dinner with Greg's family.
All in all- a lovely Christmas weekend.
Today...I put away the Christmas decorations. So glad to have that stuff behind us. Till next year.
habit fail
Well. I failed my own 21 day challenge. I'm going to rewind to October where I vowed to write for 21 days to create a habit. I managed only 16 days.... and not even consecutively.
Day one was my previous post.
Here are the following 15 days, unchecked and unedited, for your reading enjoyment:
21 Day Project.
Creating Habit.
10/2/21
Day 2.
I’m exhausted from working in the yard all day. I’ve been obsessive about clearing up some
of the underbrush in our wooded sections.
It’s the kind of work that I’ve done for days and days, and no one will
notice. Greg can’t even comprehend the
amount of hard work I have put in. It’s
much “cleaner” and I can see the sun shine through in places that have always
been in shadows.
Why is it that so many hard things go
unnoticed?
Isn’t that true for work we do on ourselves as well?
Like grief work. It’s hard. The blood, sweat and tears…. Mostly tears…..
happen in a dramatic way and then somehow the survivor just shows up on the
other side. No one really noticed it
while it is happening. But slowly, the
light shines through the places that used to be so covered in shadow.
Thayer’s death was like that for me.
There was so much shadow, for so long.
But I grieved, I wrote, I raised kids, I did the work. Lots of hard work…. Mentally, emotionally,
spiritually, physically. No one noticed
the work, but I did. Even now, I notice
those rays of sunshine spilling through and I think, “look at me now. I did it.”
And then I remember that those rays of sunshine are God’s fingerprints
reaching in to light my way. Without
God the shadows would have thickened and I would have suffocated in the
darkness. I was able to do that work,
because of God. I am thankful.
10/3/21
Day 3.
The window is bright today and the leaves are slowly swaying
in the breeze. Sunshine, although the
weather app said that it would be mostly cloudy today. There may be clouds behind the trees, but
all I see are the leaves illuminated with sunshine. I thought this view would be bright and
inspiring. It’s basically just
greenery. However, I can see the larger
trunks that are more evident since I cut back the smaller brush trees that had
sprouted and littered up the “forest” floor in our front yard. I love that we are kind of secluded and
hidden from the road. Our new red door
is seen easily though. The red door
that Greg mentioned today, and took credit for choosing. Little changes around the house that make a
big difference.
I love my guest room, and now my writing room.
How quickly I dismissed my kids’ rooms. I wonder if that is normal behavior of
empty nesters. I feel like I made the
transition much easier than some people.
I chalk it up to the fact that I was a single mom for so many
years. In a way, it’s finally “my” time. However that sounds rather selfish. On the other hand, I am thankful that Greg
and I have some time to settle more into our marriage. I’m thankful for our life group where we can
have have real conversations with other couples about life and love. The study today…. “The crazy cycle”. I feel like Greg and I are constantly stuck
in the crazy cycle. No love, no respect,
no love, no respect. It’s terribly hard
to jump out of that circle. I feel like
I try my best to give the grace needed in situations. And I know, for sure, that I have taken the
high road on many occasions. I always
want to do what a Christ follower should do.
“what would Jesus do?”…. right?
Sometimes I nail it. Sometimes I
totally flounder it. Thanks goodness
for new days. His mercies are new every
morning.
10/4/21
Day 4.
Fall. My busiest time
of year. I’ve been slowly gearing up
for the 21st annual pumpkin party.
This year, Taylor’s wedding is thrown in the mix. AND I’ve been invited to Regina’s “favorite
things” party.
I feel like I’ve run around all day with nothing to show for
it. I need “fancy” shoes for the wedding. And go figure…. None can be found. I’ve got a dress that I’m not too sure about
but Greg says, “it’s hot”. Is that the
goal of a wedding guest? I have a
feeling that the search for shoes will make me fall apart.
This favorite thing party is almost too much as well. Telling a minimalist to buy five items to
give away, to accumulate five more items is almost absurd. Just trying to find the “right’ favorite
thing has been a challenge. I’m stuck
on looking for gnomes, or bowls for popcorn.
I have to figure out some cutsie way to tie in my favorite things. And to think I don’t have “things” that are
favorite. I don’t even like stuff.
Amelia comes for a sleepover tonight. I’ve gathered some things for us to do, or
to keep her busy. I hope I don’t bore
her to death. Hanging gnome ornaments
on my tree, repotting my hens and chicks, watching The Greatest Showman. Maybe going out for lunch tomorrow? I dunno.
I’m only typing to say that I’ve typed today. I’m completely zapped. I told Kelly that I would write every day
to get in the habit…. And she said, “oh, like a diary”. That completely made my project seem like a
kid project. I suppose it is. What do I plan to accomplish from this?
My brain is tired and I don’t have any “deep” thoughts today. I’m kind of dreading going back to
Chick-fil-a this week. I already have
the scaries for tomorrow night. I’ve
been off for two weeks! It has been SO
nice to do other things and get things done around the house.
10/7/21
Day 5.
I cheated myself out of the real day 5 and 6 of
writing. I recently watched a girl on
Youtube talk about the one habit that that has changed her life. She talked a lot about keeping promises to
yourself. We keep promises to everyone
else…. But when it come to our own self…. We make promises and break them all
the time. She explained that each
time we break a promise to our self, we trust ourselves less and less. We have good intentions but don’t follow
through on SO many things. I made a
promise to write 21 days in a row…. And I blew it on the 5th
day. What a loser. If I can’t write for 5 days in a row, what
can I do? I need to power through the
tiredness, the apathy, the lack of content in my head. Just do it.
I need to establish that habit!!
21 days in a row! I owe it to
myself. I want to be a writer, right?!
Today we met for dinner at Blue Ridge BBQ to celebrate
Daniel’s 21st birthday. He
graciously came to hang out with the family.
What a funny thing that 21 years can do to a person. He was born into the family as the one and
only golden child. The first
grandbaby. ALL of us would sit and watch
him as a baby. We would marvel at every
movement and new achievement. He was
joined by many cousins and they all looked up to him. These days, he flies under the radar. He doesn’t seem to need, or seek, any special
attention. He’s become his own man. So similar to Thayer, in so many ways. I pray that he will make good, safe,
decisions and live a long happy life.
I’m so proud of him for being so independent. But sometimes I miss him.
10/8/21
Day 6.
Another day, another dollar.
Literally. I come home
exhausted…. With not much to give to Greg or to myself. I cooked dinner. And tonight, for the first time in forever,
Greg initiated us sitting on the back patio until it got dark. We chatted and chilled. It was so lovely. One evening free of the buzz of the TV in
the background. I do better without the
TV. I feel more attached to real life
when we aren’t being bombarded with the fake and scripted.
I’m seriously distracted as I type this because I just remembered that a new
Justin Beiber documentary is on Amazon today.
I’m going to head downstairs and see if it’s a watch for tonight. Go figure….. the second I type out how
lovely a TV free evening is….. now I’m itching to go and sit in front of the
box.
There is so much other work to complete soon.
We’re on the lookout for Daniel to obtain new health insurance. What a pain in my ass. Greg wants to save the money on health
insurance by dropping our “family” plan…. . which leaves Daniel out in the
cold. Interesting how we carried Taylor
until she was 25. And I know that
finding Daniel’s insurance will lay entirely upon me to research and find. Pain. In. My. Ass. I don’t know much about insurance except about
how much I HATE it.
10/9/21 (trying out writing prompts)
Day 7.
“Hidden away on the inside of the jacket”… was a twenty
dollar bill. Sam hadn’t worn the jacket
in several years but he suddenly remembered the origin of the wrinkled
bill. It must have been at least 4
years ago when he took his girlfriend to the county carnival. Mandy was only 14 years old at the time and
had begged her parents for the opportunity to go on a date, to the carnival,
with the high school junior.
Sam was so excited when her parents agreed to the date after meeting him at the
mall the previous weekend. “He seems
nice enough”, her Dad said after the brief interaction in front of the Hot
Topic Store.
Sam arrived at Mandy’s house a few minutes earlier than expected. He was greeted by Mandy’s Dad, Bill. Bill invited Sam inside and was relieved he
would have a few minutes to get more acquainted with this boy.
Sam awkwardly answered questions about school and the baseball team, in which
Sam was the star pitcher.
Bill had played ball in high school and reminisced about how he lost his shot
to play professionally when he injured his shoulder in a sledding accident the
year of the “Big snow”.
Sam knew the reality of himself going professional was slim to none. A few colleges had been to scout him out,
but he ultimately knew that he was going to choose veterinarian school.
As long as Sam could remember he wanted to work with animals. He planned to become a vet and open his own
animal hospital. Sam’s parents owned a
pet boarding business and Sam had been exposed to so many animals over the
years, often being the caretaker while his parents were out of town. He had been left in charge of a menagerie of
critters one summer weekend, and surprisingly was the lone midwife to a dog who
delivered 7 puppies. Only 5 survived. Sam was elated with the new life, and
solemnly accepted the fate of the dead.
That sole experience formed a heart in Sam that always wanted to protect
and save animals.
Mandy hopped down the stairs, carnival ready, wearing a blue gingham sundress
and a bouncy ponytail. She was elated to
be going on a real date with Sam. They
had hung out at school and been to the pizza place, with a group of friends, a
few times… but this would be the first time they were out, alone. Upon laying eyes on Sam, sitting with her
Dad, Mandy got butterflies in her stomach.
A bit of excitement, a bit of anxiety.
The thought of this being her first “real” date…. She wasn’t sure what
to expect.
Mandy followed Sam out to his black Honda Civic, as Bill commented on how
reliable those Hondas are… “Good ol’ Hondas…. That thing will last forever!” Sam thought it would be a good idea to open
the car door for Mandy, especially with her Dad’s watchful eye behind
them.
As they pulled away from the house, Sam and Mandy waved goodbye to Bill and
headed to the carnival.
The county carnival was several miles out of town and the drive gave Sam and
Mandy some time to break the ice before they arrived. The two joked about the ‘incident’ in Math
class the previous day where Ian’s soda can had burst open and sprayed all over
Claire’s notebook. It was such a
mess. Sam and Mandy were so relieved it
hadn’t happened to them.
Mandy asked Sam what he planned to do over the summer. They both talked about getting summer jobs….
But Sam figured that he would just work for his parents and help out with the
animals. Summer was an especially busy
time for boarding, since a lot of families took vacations in the summer months.
Mandy had already applied for a job at the ice cream truck and was having an
interview the following week. Sam joked
about stopping by the ice cream truck to get pup cups for all of the dogs.
It was twilight and the lights from the carnival were glowing above the tree
lines. Sam followed the signs for
“PARKING”, and parked in a crowded lot a few hundred feet from the carnival
entrance.
10/10/21
Day 8.
At the entrance gate Sam rustled through his wallet and paid
the $10 admission for the two. He was
planning to use his birthday money for the evening. His grandmother gave him $100 each year for
his birthday. This was the last year
he would receive the generous gift. His grandmother had passed away three
months ago and Sam had decided to save the money for something special. His grandmother would be so tickled about
Mandy. Sam was certain that the two of
them would have gotten along like peas in a pod. Sam’s grandmother had a great sense of
humor, and he had already noticed subtle similarities between her and Mandy.
The carnival was full of the expected.
Game booths run by shaggy carnies, a scantily pieced together Ferris
wheel and other miniature amusement park rides, food stands: funnel cake, hotdogs, cotton candy, snow
cones. At the opposite side of the
field there was a large pavilion area with a stage and live music. A bluegrass band was playing for the
evening and it gave the atmosphere a “country” feel, despite the large crowd of
city people who had ventured to the grounds.
10/11/21
Day 9.
Sam and Mandy ran into some friends from school and they
stopped by the hotdog stand to grab some dinner. Sloppy chili dogs and French fries. Mandy hoped that she wouldn’t make a mess on
her new dress. They found an empty
picnic table and sat to eat. Sam talked
with the other boys about the baseball game earlier that week. They had one by a landslide and their
cockiness showed throughout the conversation.
The girls whispered aside about their new nail colors and made plans to
go to the mall over the weekend.
After eating and chatting, Sam pulled Mandy to the side, to continue their
evening. The other teens headed off in
the opposite direction to play skill games.
Sam lead Mandy to the Ferris Wheel.
Mandy had zero interest in riding the wobbly looking contraption but she
went along with it, to seem agreeable.
The line was fairly long so they were able to people watch as they
waited for their turn.
10/12/21
Day 10.
Greg and I recently watched a documentary. It was called Social Media Dangers: Childhood
2.0 It was so discouraging and sad to
hear the facts and statistics about what social media is doing to our kids. The rates of depression, anxiety,
addictions, pornography, cyber bullying, suicide, child predators, etc.
etc. I am beyond thankful that my kids
are past the “impressionable” age…. But I know that they are still susceptible
to all of the above. As are we. I know a handful of people who either never
joined Facebook, or left Facebook after realizing that their mental health was
being jeopardized. I feel that people
who have stepped back from social media seem to be more in touch with the
people and events in real life. They
claim that they are happier and more productive.
So…. This morning I deleted my Facebook app from my phone. I only tried to check it a few times, and
was actually relieved that it wasn’t an option. After an entire day of not mindlessly spending
time on my phone, I logged in on my laptop to realize that I only had ONE
notification today. It was a
notification letting me know that my sister is coming to my Pumpkin Party. So…. I basically missed NOTHING. I think I’m on my way to a new life,
literally. I want to be more present
in the real world. I want to use my free
time intentionally. I want to do house
projects, I want to *maybe* read a book.
I want to write. I want a
better relationship with Greg. But the
kicker is: He’s more addicted to his
phone than I have ever been. And he
doesn’t realize it. My friends don’t
realize it either. My friends…. Who
suffer from mental health issues are addicted too. I just told my friends that I’m
experimenting with taking Facebook off of my phone and one of my friends
basically just told me that she didn’t care.
That she’s fine with what she’s doing.
Two of them basically made excuses of saying that in their “free time”,
that’s how they pass time.
I wish people could realize the trauma that they are putting themselves
through. I know I was just as blinded
to my addiction as the next guy, until I suddenly have the realization. Between the documentaries I’ve seen and also
seeing people who are unplugged simply living a better life. I want to pursue it now. I wish I could have helped my kids create
healthy habits with the internet. In a
way, I think my kids are better off than me…. But I honestly don’t know how
much time they spend on social media. I
know Lucas’ video game addiction has, and will, affect him into the
future. It’s seems so normalized.
So much has changed since I was a kid.
10/13/21
Day 11.
(Censored to protect innocent
people from an angry rant) But at least: I wrote ;)
10/14/21
Day 12.
I’m reading back through old blog posts.
My book from 2005-2007. Stories
that I have no recollection of…. Or vague memories of. My kids were small. Daniel was an eager learner. Daniel was a bit of a troublemaker in
preschool, but seemed to do well at all school things. And Lucas loved to cook… even at age 4. Daniel rode a bike early and Lucas got a
bike super early. I didn’t write
about it… but I do remember that both were taught by Thayer within minutes!
I wrote several times about Thayer working late and having big work
projects. He traveled to Italy and to
Spain. One blog post mentioned it was
Thayer’s first time with us in about a month.
I wrote, “I don’t know how single parents do it.” That’s pretty fascinating. I don’t recall him being gone so much! I think I was probably so consumed with the
kids. I do remember an evening when I
sat in the living room, waiting up for him- really late. I remember the fear and anger…. Not sure
what he was really doing out so late.
Reading these blog posts are basically reading a diary from my early years as a
mother. I worked at Target in the
evenings…. For the extra money, and clearly to get a break from the kids. When Thayer was promoted at work, I quit
Target and seemed more appreciative of my time with the boys.
Those years were a lifetime ago. A very
faint memory.
10/15/21
Day 13.
I am not a shopper.
The thought of upcoming Christmas stresses me out. I hate the fact we
buy gifts for people at Christmastime…. Just to buy gifts. The pressure is usually high, and I’m the one
figuring out what to give people. Last
year I wanted to boycott buying things for Greg’s people…. But he sucked, as
much as I expected…. So I had to fill in the gaps. Being a person that doesn’t like “Stuff’,
it’s hard to pick the right stuff for other people to have.
I’m invited to a”fall favorite things” party at Regina’s this year. I don’t have favorite THINGS…. I have
favorite people and/or activities. I
decided upon a rather lame gift to share.
A bowl, some kind of popcorn, m&ms and a little gnome ornament. I hope I can package them up cutsie-ish and
explain that my favorite “thing” is time spent with friends. I’m looking forward to celebrating Kelly’s
birthday tomorrow night. Friends,
games, pizza and cake. ALL of my
favoritesJ
10/16/21
Day 14.
Saturday morning. Up at 6.
Writing by 7. I don’t get
it. It’s the weekend and I’m always up
and moving like I’m going to miss something.
It is a big day though, I suppose.
Greg heads off to a football game and I work from 11-3:15. Most importantly the girls gather tonight to
celebrate Kelly’s birthday! I’m hopeful
that work will go smoothly and that I can get home to the real fun.
Fun Fact: This month’s “theme” for my
yoga practice has been “Still”…. Which basically means lots of videos about
meditation. I always thought meditation
was for “new age” people, or people who practice the “religion” of yoga. But turns out, I’ve gotten pretty good at
it…. And I’m not a weirdo! (I think).
The first video that required me to sit
still was atrocious. I fidgeted the entire time and struggled to
sit and relax. Turns out that yoga
practice is just that.... practice to make perfect, I suppose. It’s been 16 days of meditation videos
mixed in with some movement flows, and today I’m proud to report that I sat
upright for about 17 minutes, relaxed and zen (If I dare use that word. Haha)
Believe it or not, the time flew by!
Interesting how 17 minutes of stillness can fly by… but 10 minutes at my
job feels like hours.
Yesterday the clock read 4:09….. I proceeded to help a zillion guests and chat
with my co-worker only to look at the clock which read 4:19. Go figure.
As I sit by this dark window, on an early Saturday morning,
I start to see the light peek through the trees. I am rarely up to witness the sunrise. Usually just waking and getting my feet on
the ground and having my morning water.
I’m currently waiting for it to get a tad bit lighter so that I can go
for my morning walk. It’s interesting
how quickly the sun illuminates the dark.
The yard has come alive. I can
see further from the window today because we had tree limbs cut from the tree
outside. We have several trees cut down
from the edges of our wood line which seems to have made positive changes in
our landscape.
10/18/21
Day 15.
Yesterday was the first fall-feeling day. I love the fall. I wish I would have had ONE of my weddings in
the fall. The breeze is crisp and cool
in the evenings. The sun shines
differently during the days…. A feeling of heat and chill at the same
time. A fall feeling is distinctive, yet
hard to explain. I see a few of the
tree leaves starting to change as I look out of the window. Not enough to notice the color…. But if I
look closely, I can tell the trees are thinking about shedding their summer
growth. I think there was a frost
warning last night. That might come as a
reminder to the plants to start preparing for the winter. Seems like summer was short this year. I guess because I worked through it, for the
first time in ages. I can’t remember the
last time I worked in the summer. The
fall has been nice, not being on a school schedule. The seasons used to revolve around school
activities… but it certainly feels less hectic this fall. I can just focus on work, home, and upcoming
party. The pumpkin party will be
celebrating 21 years on the 28th of October. How is that even possible? I have vowed many years to scrap the party….
But it keeps happening. I’m not even
sure people enjoy it…. But they keep coming back. It’ll be a smaller crowd this year. Partly because I’ve lost two friends and
because Jamie can’t come this year.
Lucas will be out of town, and Ana.
Maybe a smaller crowd will be more relaxed?
10/20/21
Day 16.
I’m trying to become more disconnected with social
media. It’s been one week since I
deleted the Facebook app from my phone.
I haven’t missed it. AT. ALL. I
checked in via my laptop a couple of times to see if I missed any group
updates. I whittled down my groups to
just two that I need to actually check on:
Lifegroup and Ladies Night.
When I deleted FB, I also cut back on the people I follow on Instagram. It’s just a handful of people now and they
don’t post often. BUT… since the app is
still on my phone, I tend to pick up the phone to check Instagram, Email and my
work Slack app. I hope that I can curb
those tendencies over time.
I do find that I have more time to
think, or do be more productive.
I have also stopped listening to music during my daily walks. My head seems clearer and I am noticing the
nature sounds around me. Trees bustling
in the breeze. Birds chatting in the
morning air. The complete quiet has
given me more encouragement to pray during my walk and think of friends and
family. I hope this quiet time can
become even more precious than before.
There was a recent video on YouTube that questioned whether or not YouTube is a
social media. Since I do spend a
significant amount of time on YouTube each day, I was curious. The gal in the video explained that in her
opinion, YouTube isn’t true social media because it doesn’t involve the
scrolling through of content.
(preselected content in a feed).
In YouTube, however, one must actually select the content they wish to
watch. For instance….. I tend to watch
videos from my favorite creators (minimal mom and yoga with Adriene)…. But I
also get on specific topic kicks.
Lately, I’ve been watching videos about people who have given up social
media. Haha. Go figure.
I tend to choose educational or informative videos over vague random
entertainment. YouTube is my go-to if I
have time to watch a television show. I
would rather watch a few opinion pieces about a topic than to land on an hour
of mindless television.
Anywho. I really hope I can continue
this pull-back from social media. So
far, so good…..except that I continue to pick up my phone to check the few apps
I still have on hand. I hope to create
better habits with that as time goes on.
Baby steps, I suppose.

habit forming
I’ve read a few books about writing and forming habits. Simple advice: Just write…. One bird at a time. One sentence, one page. Establish a habit…. 5 minutes a day.
Simple.
I’ve created a writing room. I’ve
added plants, a clock. I admire the
room often. I feel the urge to sit and
type.
Simple.
But what in the world would I write about?!
Death? Life? Friendship? Fact?
Fiction?
I sit tonight in front of the dark window and feel the relief at my fingertips
to just be doing it. No agenda, just
the motion. I guess that’s how the habit
starts.
There’s always an underlying hesitation when I want to start the habit. I don’t
want to be judged by the REAL writers, the ones who are poetic and
mysterious. I already hear their
voices, “She needs to stop whining about it, and follow through. Write.
Take a class. Go to workshops. Learn the secret art of writing.”
The thought of being taught to write properly is a turn off. I write to get things out of my head. And by the looks of my blog posts recently…..
There is not much in my head. That’s a
scary thought.
I want to have thoughts and notions so important that they scratch at my skull
until I get them onto paper.
The people
who really know me don't often know my inner thoughts until I get them out in
print.
That’s another source of hesitation.
How can I write about things so easily but not be able to express myself
to those who are closest to me? I can’t
even speak coherent sentences.
Is expressing myself through writing being fraudulent to how I express myself
in real life? I want to be the same
person from all angles. If I write
about life, I want to be consistent in how I portray myself.
Of course, I could attempt writing fiction but I don’t consider myself creative
enough for that.
I like to write from experience. I like to write what God is teaching
me. I’ve said it before that I have
more “material” when I’m deep into learning something with Jesus.
Which- now- this entire blubbery mess gives me pause.
Where am I with Jesus? Am I
learning nothing these days?!
Here it is:
I’m walking every day, BUT no longer for exercise!
Let that sink in for a moment.
This is really a shocker because I hyper focused on exercise for YEARS! Exercise and weight loss have HAUNTED me for years! These past few months I walk for the simple reason that God has given me the ability to do it, and I don’t want to waste that blessing. Every morning I think about the people who don’t have the physical ability to walk, or the people who choose not to be in God’s creation. And then I think about how very blessed I am to be able to use my legs and spend that intentional time with God each morning. The very shift in my reasoning has made my mornings more enjoyable and the “exercise and weight loss” obsession has faded away.
I’m hopeful this somewhat drastic shift of perspective will be a habit that will reap long term benefits, spiritually and physically. How could it not?! I’ve got the best of everything each morning.
Day 1.

YouTube motivation
This life is temporary. We all know this. But we need to remember this! Don't waste your time. Follow your dream and pursue it like your life depends on it. Commit your extra time to your passion.
I instantly started moving furniture.

Ta-da! It's a start!
It's taken me a few days to open my laptop. My first writing assignment today was a review for a bed and breakfast we recently visited. And then I wrote to a customer support center regarding our bathroom scales not working.
And now this blog post.
But seriously.... Perhaps, just maybe, this is the season of life in which I can create new habits and take action.
I can become the hero.

13 years
June 2008: Telluride, Colorado Ages 7 and 5
Both boys have spent the last 13 years living out their Dad's adventurous spirit. Traveling, camping, car stuff, outdoor stuff, anything with a bit of excitement or challenge. They both have calm, adaptive personalities that tackle new projects or adventures without hesitation. They are problem solvers.

empty nest update
The nest has been empty for almost four months.
We received letters while Lucas was in Basic Training, and now we enjoy getting phone calls from him during Tech School. Greg and I have plans to fly out and visit him for a few days, next month. We're hopeful he'll have some time to fly home before he has to report to his duty station this fall.
Daniel is starting a new job at a car place that he's been eyeing for a while. I'm thrilled that he has his foot in the door, and I'm hopeful for the opportunities that may lie ahead for him. He'll be working close to our house so I will encourage him to share a meal with us on the regular.
As for me: I was determined that my stint at fast food employment would be over by the fall and that I'd jump right back into teaching preschoolers.
But, lo and behold, I've decided to stay where I am! It turns out that I am LOVING my work hours! I'm working part time..... with an availability of 11am-5pm.
I am a morning person and I have LOVED my morning routine. My routine probably mirrors someone in retirement: I wake, every day, without an alarm by 6:45-7am. I do yoga, read my Bible, take a walk, shower, drink a protein shake while catching up on my YouTube subscriptions, get ready for the day and then head into work.
This daily routine has become precious to me. Time to prepare my body, spirit and mind for the day ahead.
(I can't imagine joining the school world again and setting an alarm for 5am.)
The downfall to my convenient hours is that I only know my daily schedule one week at a time. As soon as the schedule is posted..... I fill my days off - with my social plans- immediately.
There is not a moment to lose. I thrive on my time with friends and family.
This circles back to the empty nest topic. I thank my lucky stars that I have friendships that have been consistent for years. My social life has continued without a hitch and I haven't felt an ounce of loneliness since the kids left.
Here, I must reiterate how important it is to have friends and hobbies outside of your kids!! I owe much of my sanity (if there is any) to my astronomical support system!
The nest has been empty but my heart remains full. So proud of my boys and so thankful for my friends and family.
God continues to provide just what I need, when I need it. He has always provided. I'm so thankful.

empty nest
It's designed so well. The exit from the nest is gradual. It starts with putting the little one on the bus to Kindergarten. Followed by overnight sleepovers with friends, school trips, driver's licenses, first jobs.
The first baby from my nest went rather quickly. He stayed local and I finally had a room for guests.... so that worked out well.
My youngest baby just had his last little push out of the nest. We dropped him off for Air Force Boot camp on March 8th.
Now, let's get this straight.... I've been preparing for this for YEARS. I remember years ago noting that my kids would be grown when I was 43. Noting how young I would be to have grown kids. After years of single motherhood I knew I was raising my kids up to leave home and be independent people. I had told them for years that they would not be adults living in my basement. I prepared the boys and myself for this moment.
I've always thought logically about the empty nest thing....so imagine my surprise when all of a sudden I was experiencing EMOTION the day before, the night of, and the day after Lucas' departure. The kind of emotion that welled up within and spilled out of my eyes. I didn't bawl or wail... but I had a few moments realizing the finality of my child rearing years.
The cookies left on the counter, that Lucas won't eat. The shoes in his bedroom, that he won't wear. The car in our driveway that we won't hear coming home each night. It was the little things that caught me off guard.
I think the fact that Lucas will be so far from home makes it feel more final. We won't get more than a visit from him (if that) for the next six years.
Technically.... it will always be a "visit" from both boys from now on. My kids no longer live here. That's a weird feeling.... but a feeling that a multitude of people have experienced.
I was surprised by my own emotion and then I suddenly felt sad for parents who put all of their emphasis on their kids. How do they even survive an empty nest?! It would be gut-wrenching for people who base their whole identity on their kids. This is my fair warning to anyone with younger children.... please establish hobbies, friendships, and a strong marriage! Before you know it.... your house will be empty.
If it's taken me by surprise, I know it will be hard for others.
Our Lifegroup recently discussed the difference between facts and truth, and I'm correlating that message to my current situation.
The facts of a child-less house are all around me: Dark and quiet rooms, uneaten sweets, quiet cars, clean bedrooms and bathrooms.
But the truth of a child-less home is that I raised strong independent young men. That was my plan all along, and I am so proud of them. The truth is also that I'm still a mom....and I'll be adjusting to my new role as a mom to adult children.
Here's to a new era. :)

take a minute
I have finally finished that book by John Eldredge.
He wrote about adding a "one minute pause" to the day, in order to pause from the busyness of life, to re-center focus on relationship with God.
And then.... he promoted an app that he developed.
Of course he did. I thought to myself how convenient to write a book about disconnecting and then prompt people to add another app to their phone. Just one more technical thing to be burdened with.
I have zero need for some kind of meditation app.
I had seen ads for meditation apps on TV and thought that people don't need meditation apps... they just need Jesus. I thought my prayer life was sufficient... I chat with Jesus throughout my day. All is fine, right?
But...I downloaded the app to see what the fuss was about.
I was concerned that it would be another corny Christian thing with not much benefit except checking off the box of doing something "Christian".
The app encourages you to set two reminders to "pause" during your day. You start with a one minute pause and can gradually extend to 3, 5 and 10 minute pauses.
My first pause.... I'll admit...I thought was kind of corny. A voice I wasn't familiar with and some prompts that were new to me.
But!! It was refreshing and a great re-set for my day.
So.... I have continued with it. (13 days so far.)
As I read through the book, following the concepts presented, the prompts made more sense and the "pauses" have been more meaningful.
I actually look forward to my "pause" reminders each day. It's a great time to put a pin in it, stop everything, and spend 1-10 minutes with God.
I have zero excuse NOT to do this.

Check it out. It's worth your time. God is worth your time.

our focus
Greg and I have been reading through the Old Testament with our church. We keep noting how God had so much wrath. Cities were destroyed and entire groups of people were slaughtered, over and over and over, as the Israelites moved toward the promised land. Nothing spared: women, children, livestock all destroyed.
I think we've all learned along the way that God is a jealous God. He, alone, deserves all of our praise and affection.
The folks he destroyed were all people that either didn't follow him, or had turned their backs on him.
The God of the Old Testament seems very different than the Jesus displayed in the New Testament. And how does all of that fit in to the God that we follow today?
The thing is..... God has always been the same. He will always be the same. The one thing that we can count on in life is the stable, unchanging character of God.
Greg has questioned why Old Testament-type events aren't happening now.
I ran across a few verses in Deuteronomy that gave me pause and let me consider the fact that God could very well be allowing plagues and curses upon us, as a people, because we have turned our backs on Him.
Just like the folks in the Old Testament, we are surrounded by idols and we don't even think twice about it:
Our computers, our phones, our jobs, our children, our television viewing, politics, food, money; the list could go on and on.
So....let this verse sink in for a minute:
"Then the Lord will scatter you among all nations, from one end of the earth to the other. There you will worship other gods—gods of wood and stone, which neither you nor your ancestors have known. Among those nations you will find no repose, no resting place for the sole of your foot. There the Lord will give you an anxious mind, eyes weary with longing, and a despairing heart. You will live in constant suspense, filled with dread both night and day, never sure of your life." Deuteronomy 28:64-67
I have not studied the Bible enough to speak in scholarly ways... But in this verse, I heard our society, as a whole, screaming out.
Could it be that God has placed a curse or plague of anxiety, despair, (dare I even say mental illness) upon us because of our idol worship? I know that may be a stretch.... but isn't it true that the mental and emotional state of our society seems to be continually deteriorating? Even the despair and instability surrounding the Coronavirus.... Could all of these things be a modern day plague upon us?
I'm not over here declaring that we are being punished.... but why wouldn't we be?
Just as a loving parent would discipline a child, I know that God disciplines us.
I'm a huge fan of natural consequences for my kids. And I think God is too.
In that sense....if we devote ourselves to idols... the natural consequence is that we see less and less of God. Being separated from God we would naturally experience a loss of peace, a loss of stability, a loss of everything that only God can provide for our emotional, mental and spiritual well being.
I'm jumping on board with the folks who are praying for a revival in our land! Lord knows we need Him now.
Deuteronomy 30 describes the restoration that was promised to those who turned to God. (go read it here).
God is always here, waiting for us to engage. We just need to look at Him.
Lord, help me...help all of us... turn our eyes toward you.

outdoors

I've been reading some books lately, related to having good habits and creating a life that brings me closer to God. I'm well aware that Bible reading is the best reading option to get close to God but I'm learning that we need to be intentional about so many other things to be able to hear Him clearly.
My current read is Get Your Life Back by John Eldredge. One chapter is dedicated to the importance of spending time outdoors. I was floored with the fact that Eldredge found an article that claimed the average person now spends 93% of their life indoors. He goes on to talk about that as a tragedy and a catastrophe for the human soul. We are surrounded by fake for the majority of our life. Everything artificial..... from the surfaces we touch to the artificial lights, to the artificial climates.
It really IS a tragedy. My heart breaks, especially for kids who are growing up in today's culture of screens and indoor immobility.
No sooner than I read that chapter and made a vow to extend my own experiences outdoors, I sat down to watch a movie called The Trail. It is a fictitious story of a young housewife who was left to fend for herself on the Oregon Trail. It was one of those quiet films where most of her journey was documented as she traveled alone in the snowy woods. Not the most exciting movie- but one scene made me stop, rewind, and record what the character had to say to a little native boy that she picked up along her journey:
"I've never known God before. Not like this. Not in my bones. Not until you followed me. I felt alone for weeks. I didn't see the trees, the stars, the way the snowflakes glisten like diamonds in the sun's rays. I was in such a hurry to escape paradise, God's masterpiece. The finest church I've ever seen. God isn't just in the Bible or church, God is everywhere. I had to lose everything to see that."
Aren't we all like that? In such a hurry to get through it all. Going through the motions and not taking the time to stop and see God all around us. His creation is there for us to experience, not just travel through.
I've been known to complain about having to tend to our flower beds each summer. I spend time each day pruning, weeding and caring for the same plants- that I cut to the ground each fall- knowing I'll have to do the same thing again next year.
The truth is.... I love that feeling of working outdoors and accomplishing something beautiful. Something has to be said for dirt under your fingernails and a good sweat.
All of these little moments that I have taken for granted, or grumbled about..... I want to find a new appreciation for! I want to be more aware of my time outdoors, experience the healing of it, and I want to aim to be more intentional of finding God's voice in His creation.
I've never been one to carry an umbrella. I like to tell people that I haven't melted yet, and that God gave us an amazing waterproof shell called skin.
The truth is....after Thayer died I remember getting caught in the rain and thinking to myself how lucky I was to be alive and be able to feel the rain on my skin.
THAT'S the kind of attitude I want to foster. I want to be able to feel the outdoors and appreciate how lucky I am to be alive!
Get out there and experience God.

waiting
43. The age that I read the entire Bible for the first time. All of it.... even the geneology parts!
My friend, Beth, turned me on to a Chronological Bible that was a game changer for my Bible reading. I have read the entire Bible this year as well as developed a habit of looking forward to my time in the Word each day. I wonder why it has taken me 43 years to get this excited about studying God's word? I guess maturity has alot to do with it.... but reading the history in the correct order has been so eye opening to me!
I started reading daily on January 1st.... and as I made my way through the Old Testament, I quickly confirmed to myself that the Old Testament is full of darkness, death and destruction.
All winter I kept telling myself, "I can't wait till Jesus shows up!"
"Just wait until the gospels.... and then I can read all about Jesus' time on earth."
"Once Jesus shows up, everything will change!"
The days passed and the seasons changed. I felt like I waited all year for Jesus to show up. Then, FINALLY on September 25th, Jesus was born. I was so excited! The part of the story I had been waiting for was finally here! I enjoyed catching up with Jesus stories until the story of His ascension happened on November 7th. And I thought, "well... that was short lived."
And the rest of the story is all about everyone waiting on Jesus again.
I've known all along that the Bible was a big story with Jesus at the center of it all.
But now I have a clear understanding of how the Bible tells the story of waiting for Jesus. Soooo much anticipation and waiting!
Abraham's family waited for over 40 generations for Jesus to show up. And here we are, still waiting for him, again.
I have recently heard two speakers use the phrase "between two advents". (It was either the first I've heard this phrase OR the first time I actually paid attention to it. Either way, it stuck with me.)
The first advent is what we celebrate every Christmas, Jesus come to earth as a babe.
The second advent..... we're waiting on.... just as the apostles, after Jesus' ascension, were anticipating his return... We're still in their shoes, stuck in between two advents.
This is the first season of my life in which I really understand how the earth is groaning for Him and his future plans. (Romans 8:18-25).
This year, especially, I can feel the anticipation in the air. I feel the need for Jesus in our society, in our churches, in our homes, in my heart. I have an anxious longing for him this year. I'm ready whenever He is.
Come, Lord Jesus.
You, too, must be patient. Take courage for the coming of the Lord is near. James 5:8
And so, dear friends, while you are waiting for these things to happen, make every effort to be found living peaceful lives that are pure and blameless in his sight. 2 Peter 3:14

Covid diaries
I am KEENLY aware that some people get REALLY sick with this thing. In fact, as I have composed this over the past few weeks... one of my best friends is currently caring for her mother who is recovering from Covid AND anxiously awaiting daily hospital updates about her Dad who is fighting for his life against this virus. I know this virus is big deal.... and I don't want to sound like I'm taking it lightly. I want to acknowledge that I am aware that it means life and death to a percentage of people.... And if you, or your loved one falls into that percentage.... it can be all consuming and life altering.
I knew I had possibly, probably, been exposed by a relative of a friend, or the friend, or.... whoever I used the cart after at Food Lion that week. The symptoms were no more than a severely mild head cold..... a dull sinus headache, stuffiness and 24 hours of body aches. But the symptoms that tipped the scales was my total lack of taste and smell.
The moral weight of "do I go back to work" after feeling super mild symptoms was enormous.....so I went to get tested. In ANY other reality, I would have just gone on with life as usual. But in our current reality of guilt and fear of killing your family, friends and co-workers..... I took the high moral road and got tested...... put panic in whoever I had seen that week..... And then put my family's life on hold for the next 14 days. (a small price to pay in the grand scheme of things.... and I'm thankful that my symptoms were mild)
I am heartbroken for the amount of people who are suffering from isolation this year. The mental health issues, child abuse, loss of jobs, loss of friends, hunger, thoughts of suicide, those that will ail alone, and those that will die alone.

flying
It's been a full year and I'm happy to say he's still making it on his own. He and some friends live in a cute little house across the river. He's working lots of hours, back at the pizza place where he started. I haven't had to bail him out financially, or bail him out of jail----yet- so I'm very proud of him for the strides he has made this year.
Anyway....

hospitality
I just finished reading The Gospel Comes with a House Key: Practicing Radically Ordinary Hospitality in Our Post-Christian World, by Rosaria Butterfield.
I spent many hours on porches and at kitchen tables talking, dreaming. My Sunday Night Ladies group was birthed around my table and those ladies have been my lifeline.
I always give the disclaimer that I'm not the best host.... because I might forget the basic needs of guests.... but I always want people to make themselves at home and feel welcome.
I'm only months away from having an empty nest and I've been pondering what I can do once the house is quiet. How can I be hospitible to those in need? What does God want us to do with the extra space and time? What's my next mission?
I recently created a lovely little guest room in Daniel's old space. It's my first official guest room and I'm pretty giddy about it.

for the birds
![]() |
(These are clearly not standing on one foot...but you get the idea)
When I take the time to recognize how perfectly birds are created.... I am always reminded of the passage in the Bible that tell us not to worry:
We are more valuable than a whole flock of birds! God certainly looks out for us!
Ah.... if only to live like the Sanderlings.... steady, even on one foot, hopping over the waves and remaining balanced in the shifting sand..... knowing the Creator will supply all of our needs.
